She seems fine other wise ...no signs of being sick but bubbling mucus from the nose. I am new to having chickens and all the ones I have raised my silkies have never had this. These hens are 16 wks old. They are in my house until I make sure they are not sick then I will put them out with the rest. Any opinions? They are state tested so the women said

state tested for which disease? I believe npip flocks are state tested for pullurum typhoid and m.gallisepticum and if that's the case you should have got a numbered report slip with sale that shows the clean test. reason I say this is I myself bought npip state tested birds. they come with a united states department of agriculture animal and plant health inspection service npip state numbered receipt. even with those state tests they can still carry or contract different illnesses. have they been vaccinated? if yes against which disease? sounds to me she is infected with a respiratory illness.I would treat her with tylan50. dose is for large birds 1/2 Cc small birds 1/4 cc once daily for 5 days. tylan packs a big punch on respiratory issues. if she were mine I'd start tylan asap. you did a very smart thing keeping her inside away from your birds! I hope this is helpful. I wish you the best!

I didn't get any papers, where can I buy this?

the feed store has it in the cattle section but don't worry on the bottle it says for cattle many many poultry owners use it including me
its really great stuff for respiratory issues. as for the papers they are not important they just prove the state test the lady was claiming they had. I just keep mine on file with there vaccination records. the only thing I know there good for is to prove the negative state tests.she should have had the birds receipt or file to give you if it was state tested. maybe you can ask her for it? but its no big deal if you don't get it. its only paperwork. with tylan you should be seeing a improvement in a few days good luck :)

I have had a super stressful day. This was our first chicken swap we have ever gone to...I had brought my 4 roosters Silkie-mixes. The min we pulled up and got them out of the car some guy came up to us and asked if our birds were state tested. If not we couldn't have them there. So hubby didn't want the roos to come back home...because of them all fighting...so he let them go w the auction guy, whom if doesn't sell them will kill them. So here I am crying and in my stuper I bought these 2 girls from the cleanest looking stand. I didn't notice anything there at the swap but once home I did...and there is a smell. Her beak smells like farts. I am very disappointed. I care about them already and want to take care of her. Will this get better? How long do I give her meds? And should the other one get the same treatment since they are together and have been raised together?

I'm so sorry I didn't know the beak smelt that changes things a little unfortunately foul smelling discharge from nose (that fart smell) is a symptom of infectious coryza. not saying she has it for sure but when you mentioned that I looked it up in The Chicken Health Handbook
I remembered reading about the foul smell. hopefully this isn't the case! are her eyes swollen at all? is she wheezing? if not I'd still treat with the tylan.problem is if it is corzya she will a carrier. but she doesn't have the other symptoms of corzya only the foul smell which could be the sinus infection. tylan will help in either case. use it for 5 to 7 days at dose . which is large bird 1/2cc small bird 1/4 cc. keep her separated . I wouldn't treat the other unless she is showing signs of illness. I'm so sorry this happened! yes she will get better my hope is she is not a carrier once her symptoms are gone! tylosin or tylan is really really great for respiratory issues and you should start to see improvements in a few days. sounds like you caught it early. that's great. she doesn't have the other symptoms of corzya so hopefully its not that. I'm so sorry your having to go through all this! I'm here if you need to talk. I think the smell is likely just the sinus infection.. you should see a big improvement with the tylan. this makes me so sad that they sold you a sick bird! again I am truly sorry and I'm here if you need to talk OK.I wish you the very best and hope she's better really soon so you can enjoy her! good luck !

Thank you for your support and help...after you sent the last message last night I held her and I kept smelling this fart smell I thought it was just her poo but it was only at her beak. But it is not that strong for anyone else that has a normal nose probably wouldnt smell it and the runny nose isnt noticeable unless of course you are holding her and see it. I say this because if you had a flock of birds out side she wouldnt stand out but the fact that I just got her and was holding her and have her inside away from the rest I caught it. I really hope its just a sinus infection. Can I have her tested for Coryza or is it real expensive? What other signs should I look for? The other girl is fine and they are together

Here are some pictures of her, you can see her eyes are clear ...can't see the mucus but when she breaths it bubbles out. She drank tons of water last night. Poor girl I really hope this is just a sinus infection

Ok so she has had her first dose of Tylan50
Heres what happened today...my anxiety about the situation got the best of me and I called the vet, I spoke to his wif; not being able to see her she prepared me for the worse or made me take the safest procaitions. kinda made me worry that this could be serious SO I called the state to see if they would test the birds. They are coming to test my whole flock on the 17th *ugg* did I make things worse? But at least I'd know my birds are fine which they have never came in contact w these girls anyways. But if these 2 girls come back not ok I need the state to know they NEVER were in contact w mine because they put them down. Ok I can't do the what ifs!!! Tonight the mucus is yellowish white more boogery then clear watery like it was. However only on one side...no swelling

What would you do honestly? Continue to medicate or send her back? I have had her and her sister for 1 day...all this in one day! I am naturally a nurturer so its hard sending her back because if it is just a sinus infection I can help her, its the if its not then what?

SHARING from another thread I had started a while back.... I did tylan50, acv in waterers and cleaned the coop well. but mine was due to switching to powdery pine shavings : (

tylan 50 injectable, but I will give orally.
Dosage is 1/2cc for standard size birds for 5 days, 1/4cc for smaller birds for 5 days. You should see improvement by the 3rd or 4th day....continue and include the 5th day dosing. You can pull up the amount needed and squirt it onto a piece of bread and feed it to her. Make sure to use only the amount of bread she will eat so that she gets the entire dose. The reason you administer for 5 days is because it takes longer to absorb into their system, alot is excreted, not like injecting once a day for 3 days where it goes directly into the respiratory system. or Pull the wattles down and the mouth will open, then squirt the liquid in the mouth. Then quickly release the wattles so the bird can swallow the liquid on her own without aspirating. She may struggle abit before you dose her but will tire, hang on to the wattles and dont let go.

SHOULD I do the ACV or BLEACH in this case?
BLEACH ~ "2 cups bleach to 1 gal. water and then add in a 1 gal. water bucket 1 oz of the mix and water all for at least 24 hours. It's a very dilute bleach solution - probably to reduce transmission of an infectious agent through the shared waterers. Like putting Oxine is the waterers, which some people do all of the time."

ACV~ Give your birds an astringent solution at the rate of four teaspoons of Apple Cider Vinegar to each gallon of water (but never in galvanized metal containers). The tannin in ACV will reduce the viscosity of mucus, and 'cuts through' the coatings in the mouth, throat and intestines, improving the uptake of nutrients/vitamins, and is useful in the treatment of any respiratory disease, as it helps them to expel the mucus from their system. It also reduces the presence of botulism, and is the only effective treatment for the toxin it produces. The target pH is 5~6, or slightly acidic, which also creates a hostile environment for internal parasites ... all that goodness, and for quite literally pennies per gallon ~;-)"

And can I try this along too or don’t bother?
"Crushed ( 7) 1000 mg vitamin c tablets.(one for each chicken) added two to three tablespoons of cinnamon to the powder and mixed it in feed."

Chicken
Medications
by Dr. James Barton and Clarence Gillihan
(excerpt)
".....Bacterial Diseases:
Purchase a bottle of Tylan 50 and several 3cc
syringes with 25 to 30 gauge 1/2" needles. Give your hen 1 to 1 1/2 cc. of Tylan under the skin of the neck .........Continue daily injections for three days but not more than five. Withdrawal time is one month. Tylan does not have much activity against coccidia, but it is very good against Mycoplasma bacteria which is responsible for some respiratory diseases.

To inject Tylan 50, pull the hens feathers back
to reveal the skin on base of the the neck on her back. Lift the skin up and insert the needle gentlty but firmly into the skin just far enough to allow the Tylan to be injected. You will be able to feel it. Be careful that you do not inject yourself. Make certain that you do not push the needle through the skin and out again not injecting at all................

Because Tylan is so powerful, it is recommended
that you purchase some Beneficial Bird Bacteria
and feed it to your chicken after she recovers.
Tylan wipes out all the benficial bacteria that is normally present in a chickens digestive system.

Also, Tylan can kill skin cells near the site of the injection so you should not use anything stronger than Tylan 50 - a stronger variety, Tylan-200 is also available at your local feed store, but this will likely do more harm than good.

When purchasing syringes, get them from a
local drug store. The 'human' grade needles are a little sharper than the vetrinary grade. The cost is about the same and your hen will thank you...."
