Just call me MotherGoose :D!! Day 1 Photos

If you are planning to bring in a rooster to mate your hens you really need to think about all it entails. The rooster would need to be quarrantined for 4 - 6 weeks to prevent any outbreak of disease or illness in your current flock. Then he would have to be penned where they could see him a week or two before you put him in the coop. They will not let him mate them even then. He will have to work for it, wooing the hens with his charms and when they are ready and only then will they let him mate. It is not like dogs or goats and such. Hens can be very picky.

You might have better luck buying some hatching eggs from a RIR breeder and raising up your own rooster for your flock. Breeder stock RIR's will be nicer than anything you can get from a hatchery too.

I hadn't heard that before. One thing I find interesting is that at Holderreads, they use paris of Pilgrim to be the surrogate parents for all the geese they raise of all breeds.

I have a pair and I did everything I could to separate them to get Pilgrim offspring. But they pine so much for their flock when I do and they end up flying out of the breeding pen to be with them. I'm pretty sure an Embden is breeding my Pilgrim female. So, I think to grow the numbers of them, I may have to buy another pair so that I'll have 4 for a small sub-flock next year.

MissPrissy I just thought you might want to see what the mom and dad of those babies your gonna have look like

Goose eggs are out of the turner.

I candled them and I can clearly see movement in all 3 eggs. I was worried about one because last night I couldn't see any movement at all. It must have been sleeping because it is moving tonight!

Here we go, CDM! Send me some good hatching vibes!
