Just candled my eggs

are they dark or see through (the whole egg by day 18 you wouldnt see any vessels)

actually i'll argue that.

depends on the flashlight/candler, and color of the shell. my EE are totally black, the dorkings are white shelled. all set the same day. the bantams are lightly tinted (almost pink) and fall somewhere between.

I can never see anything when my chicks are about to hatch because they fill the egg...its dark and a light air cell. I wouldn't open one. It might just be growing faster. There is no reason to before day 21 and probably Day 23 or 24

i'll agree, if it's all dark, and you can't see anything, err on the side of caution...

that quitter on day 17 i posted earlier, i did open him up... and glad he quit. only had 1 wing, so i'm guessing other problems too. i like to know why things happen. most of the quitters i couldn't see anything obvious.

I thought I'd be disgusted or sad to eggtopsy, but once I did I was fascinated. I like to know why things happen too. I've only ever had one that was obvious why it died. It died on day 10 or so, but when I candled I could have sworn there was 2 chicks and 2 heart beat flutters but I could only see one yolk. When I opened it was like a siamese twin...there was two heads kinda attached. It was very cool.

I can't find the candling pics, but heres the chick. It was clearer than the pic shows.

if you can find them, small clear glass/plexi boxes work neat. if you're careful you can break the egg into water in one, and not damage the yolk, you get a clearer picture of what's going on inside the egg sometimes. if i've got the time i try to get it out as intact as possible... i did one once by removing a part of the shell then cutting the membrane with scissors to see how they attached with the chick. wish i had pics from back then but that pre-dated digital pictures. heck it predated most of the internet i think.

Thats a great idea!!! I'm definitely going to use a clear bowl next time. I tried so hard to not break the yolk...I don't know why yolks sometimes break so easily. Store bought egg yolks never break that easy!!

well, candling after lockdown didn't hurt! Jap & Ducky have their first chick hollering quite loudly in the 'bator. zipped about half hour ago.

Now Shadow (senior spoo aka std poodle) has turned back into a hyper drooling mess who MUST see the chickies... LOL Sunny (1.5 yr spoo puppy) says 'yeah been there done that *yawn*'.

4 more bantams 1 ee externally pipped, several others internal pips. (yes i candled, then made sure to crank the humidity back up quick)
