Just couldn't euthanize it.....

I thank God everyday that my 7 brothers are good for something. If I need anything like this done I speed dial one of them. They come over and do the deed for me. I can eat it but can't kill it LOL.

At butchering time I will call my brother Jimmy he has an assembally line chicken butcher tabe that he brings from house to house it hooks to hot and cold running water so you have fresh water going over the birds from start to finish. He sets up the cone to start has a 1/2 drum of water over a propane tank then moves to the chicken plucker and then goes down the table from there. It is too cool. And the charge is right he takes a few birds in pay.

Sorry got off subject. You are braver than me and I commend you for it. Wish ya had a brother to call, I would lend ya one of mine but you live kind of far away.

On my first hatch, I had 3 with really bad spraddle leg. I used the starter fluid on paper towels and placed that in a plastic ice cream tub (something disposable and seals real good) I did it out in the pole barn and once I put the chicks in, I walked away. It was so hard, but it would have been even harder to stand there and listen. I think they fight more from the newness of the container and being confined than from the ether. After a few minutes, I came back and it was done. I haven't had to do it again, but if I did I would use the same method. Breaking their neck is just too violent for me, that is why I chose the ether. I wish the best to you and your chick. I am sure you will do the best that you can!

the chickie is still alive. i've tried to get it to drink water, but it acts like it just goes into its lungs. i keep expecting to find it dead, but it's always still just laying there, breathing. you guys are all so sweet! thanks for your support in this matter. by the way, i do have a brother who would kill it if i handed it to him. i don't see him often though. i could let my chicken-killing dog have it. it'd be dead in 2 seconds. when i was about 14, i was walking to school and saw a quail get hit by a car. the poor thing was flapping all around still when i got to it, so i held on to it's head, gave it a firm swing and it's head came off into my hand. that's the only time ican remember putting an animal out of its misery. i had watched the co2 method on utube and could stomach it okay, so i had hoped the chick would just gasp several times and fall asleep. unfortunately i wasn't prepared for watching it fight it so hard. it seemed in pain and i didn't want that. dying on its own would be more peaceful, basically of dehydration, which i have heard isn't really painful. i'm going to at least look up the vinegar/baking soda method and consider it.

I had to cull one of my chicks last night-it was hard, but I just went in and did it. I used super sharp scissors and it went very quickly. I may have to do it to two more chicks, and not looking forward to it. It is a really hard thing to do-don't feel bad that you backed out

well, i can't say i very much liked that idea but i suppose you didn't have many options i'm looking for a special needs chicken so if you decide to save it please email me [email protected] it would have lots of room and a loving home

Don't give up on it. I had one with VERY bad spraddled legs & I did the band-aid thing as well as the make-up sponge trick & it worked beautifully! The chick is now healthy, happy and you can't even tell it was comprised at the beginning....try those two things before killing it.
