i thought i was the only person who candeled early. I looked at them wednesday night and i could see the yolk moving freely. That was one concern i had with putting off setting as long as we did. Didnt want the yolk sticking to the shell. i only looked at 2 or 3 cause i think we are already pushing our luck with as many kiddos that are "helping". Waiting! Waiting! Waiting!

Oh Short Circuit, you always make me smile. Don’t you know patience is a virtue? My husband has banned the incubator from the dining room table so now it must sit in the office. I told him that the chicks would be deprived of the same education experience that the other ones had as they were able to listen to me watching some great shows like Earth 2, X-Files, MacGyver. That really stimulated them to come out of their shell. I could always hear them chirp the intro song in their shell… I am not sure of long term effects as I gave them away. I traded them for 3 big boxes of cauliflower. Oh, I am such a horrible mother…

Day 5. Anybody all antsy yet? I might have to candle a bit tonight.

you sent them to their new loving homes (unless they went to a butcher then thats bad) lmao j/k

but the count of 22 on day 4 is 7 definite chicks I can see the black spot and veins on some will candle again day 10 then day 18 (first time incubating so I HAD to know if it was working lol)

I did have two roosters, one black giant and one buff orphington but the black giant went missing the weekend my hen decided to set. (We are considering putting out for deadbeat dad on him and getting child support) I haven't tried to candle or anything and I bet she probably has about a dozen eggs under her. She did come from a hatchery, but I got her at the local farm store last year. Should I try to check the eggs to see if they are any living? If they aren't any good should I put her off the nest so she doesn't have to sit there for three weeks? I solved the shelter problem by taking the bottom half of one of those plastic dog houses and put over top of her and the nest. It made it through the bad stuff last night so I guess it worked even though she was not happy about us interrupting her work.

Now I have a new problem...I have been leaving the back door open because it was so warm here and this boy duck thinks he should just walk on in, UNINVITED I might add. I go to shoo him out and he takes his time and just squawks at me. lol

No worries, the little buggers went to a family with kids and many avian friends. I just can't wait for my next hatch. Maybe I will candle tonight and see. Last time I managed to hatch a chick out of a very porous egg and I have 2 of those again so I can't wait to find out if I will be lucky again. Husband does like chicks but our dining room is next to our bedroom (yeah, how messed up is that?) so the constant noise from the incubator is driving him nuts. I managed to sneak the incubator back into the dining room throughout the week when he is gone so that the chicks at least get a little bit of culture. Tonight is Stargate SG-1 night. They may enjoy that before I move them back. When I don't watch TV they get some Elton John or Journey to rock to. I am hoping for a good ration with my 26 eggs too but some of them I had sitting at room temperature for 7 days so I am not sure. We'll see. Patience...patience...patience...

thank you for the welcome..im glad that im not the only person that "crackin over hatchin". My preschoolers are doing very well. we have talked about not having to pick them up to turn them...just sorta slide them around. We talk about handwashing, counting, the difference between up and down. My kiddos are all excited to be mommy chickens ( or daddy chicken as the case may be or is that dammies??) all was going well till i served them scrambled eggs for breakfast
