I am looking for good egg layers that won't range too far from home. We live in the southern part of Tennessee and have pretty mild winters. What would be some good chick breeds?

Welcome to BYC!
When you say "too far", how close are you wanting the birds to stay to your home and how close are your nearest neighbors? Is your property fenced at all or open onto adjoining properties? Are you looking for just egg production or are you wanting a flock that can also be useful for meat purposes? How many eggs, per week, do you need to get from each bird on average? Are you looking for a particular egg color?

The property is 3 acres with no fences. I am not interested in meat chickens and like the large brown eggs. The eggs are just for family use. Thanks

If you want jumbo size dark reddish brown eggs and terrific layers and chickens who are easy to manage, get yourself some Welsummers. They also are easily sexed at hatching and your likelyhood of getting unwanted roosters because of sexing mistakes is very low.
