Just had a chick hatch with large blood sac

I do agree with helping a chick also, BUT.... You have to know WHEN to help and when not to help !!!! And HOW to help !!!

Noone knows what is going on inside an egg and who knows what will happend after we help or not !!!!

I wish PeepersMom would let us know how the chick is doing.... ive been checking this post for 3 days hoping to find out.

Also PeepersMom don't get to upset about what people say about it, let it be a learning experience. We all have made mistakes.

I was thinking the same thing. She's probably scared to post again!

Peepersmom, no one is deriding you for doing what you thought was best. We all try to use the threads as learning tools for anyone that may be reading them. Heck, I learn something everyday.

If you get a chance, let us know if the baby made it. It will help all of us when hatching time comes. Thanks!

Just the other day I had to help a chick that had zipped completely. I noticed it had been zipped completely for several hours and kept moving and chirping, so I took it out and found that the membrane had adhered to its feathers. I have been having very bad luck with hatching. I'm not sure if that chick was one that has survived or not. I am learning that hatching is a very technical art. There is a lot to know to avoid and many mistakes to make. I don't know how my first batches ever made it at all because I did so many things wrong. I didn't have a clue what I was doing. I shook the eggs to hear them peep, took them to my son's kindergarten class WHILE they were hatching:eek: in a basket covered with a towel. I took the lid completely off the incubator numerous times during hatching. And back then I had a higher survival rate than I have in the last 3 hatches. Once I think I fix a problem, apparently I make another mistake. I used to candle them without washing my hands, so I would get lots of loss due to blood rings. Now I wash my hands before every time I touch them. One batch still had almost half get blood rings, one batch only had one blood ring. Let's be nice to the newbies. There is a lot to know.

Guys I understand what your saying about helping to hatch But I have the same problem AND I did not help at all. The poor little begger is dragging itself about with a blood sac behind it. I have not opened the bator I have not assisted the hatch but the chick is still very wet 3 30 hours after hatching and still draging this blood sac behind it? It does not look good. So what is the human way to euthanise a chick?

Do you have a pic Hun? I would get it out and have a look to see what it is it might be its intestines or something.

If your going to cull it I've found the quickest humane way is a sharp hatchet to the neck I've also before I got my axe put them in a double zip lock bag kept it open so the didn't suffocate and bang them as hard as I can against a rock sounds terrible but sometimes the kindest act you can do is put them out of there misery especially when they cant eat or drink or barlely walk

It is a terrible thing I know but sometimes it has to be done. Although this time God took the disition out of my hands. The poor little chap died around 5 this morning. My friends brother raises chickens from day old chicks, he's a great strapping lad with a heart as big as cabbage. He said to me if ever he has to "Do the nessasery" he holds it in his hand for a moment or two until it's calm and then pushes its neck against the metal edge of the gully in the barn, with his thumb. Metal edge one side of the neck, thumb on the other. Its very quick apparently and all over before the bird knows what's happening. Sorry if writing this has upset anyone, I just thought it might help someone in the future.

I just had a chick hatch with large blood sac attached to it! What is it and what do I do?
Same with mine, had to help it. ,pipped one spot, after it had been over 2 days no progress helped it enough to get head out,was starting shrink wrap. Anyway, started small blood sac, left it alone and this morning it's walking chirping acting normal but still long blood sac there. Hen was laying on them for 2wks, then she got off the nest for 2 days, put them in incubator thinking they were dead, a wk later ALL hatched, this was only one had a problem. Rest dome good and perfect.. hope yours is doing good, best wishes
