When I got home this evening I noticed my runt RIR in a nesting box so I left her alone thinking she was about to lay an egg. Well I have 10 laying hens and had 10 eggs in the coop, thought I was gonna get an 11th egg, waited about an hour and checked to see if I got that egg, nothing, I reached in and she kinda stumble out of the nest box, so I picked her up and she fussed, so I placed her back in the box. I let an hour go by and I just went and check on her, she was still there so I picked her up to check and see if there was anything wrong with her, wounds, anything. I noticed she had built up poop on her butt feathers so I got a damp rag to wipe it off. When I got next to her vent I notice yellowish ooze starting to come out so I gently wiped a bit more and more came out. After about ten gentle wipe she started to kick a bit, not hard at all and her head just relaxed and fell, she passed in my arms cradled like a baby. One thing I noticed the oozing smelled very strong. It was a bit hard to take but I think she went peacefully. I'm wondering what the yellow discharge was, any ideas. BTW, she is buried in the back yard. Very sad day!!

Awe so sorry for your loss. Sounds like you did the best you knew how, but I know it still hurts a lot. I was thinking egg bound. I don't know tho, maybe others can tell you. Just so sorry!

A bad smell means infection, I think.....So sorry to hear that! At least you were with her when she passed......That's a comfort.....

So sorry for your loss. Sounds like an infection. Peritonitis? But she wouldn't be laying with this, and you said you had 10 for 10 today. I am genuinely curious as to what the issue could have been.

I'm curious too, I originally brought the damp cloth with me to moisten the built up poop on her feathers thinking maybe her vent was plugged but it was totally clear of anything, but I noticed a little bit of yellow that looked to me like puss but a little runnier and then notice the strong smell. I kind of gently gave a very slight rub above the vent and noticed more yellow come out, not a whole lot but just a bit, I did it about 5 more times very gently and every rub had the same results and suddenly she passed. That's the best I can describe it. Hope someone can tell me what she was suffering from..

Is it possible that when I picked her up and held her like a baby that if she had built up fluid in her that it could of drowned her and that is why she died so suddenly????
