Barbaric would've been doing nothing. Sometimes we have to make quick decisions. She was hurting bad and now she's not. The risk of infection and future prolapse is very high. You made your decision based on the fact you cared about her. That's all any chicken can ask and something too few get.

Thank you so much everyone for sharing your stories and losses. I am so sorry to hear about them. It really hurts so much to lose a pet, they really are our friends and family members. I feel a lot better having read all of your advice and sharing. BackYard Chickens has been such a nice place to come and feel a sense of community with other like-minded people. Some people don't always understand but I've only found understanding and compassion on this site, thank you

I hope you are feeling a bit better.
I am. I can look back a bit better now and say, 'yes, that was the right decision.'
Yesterday was the first morning in 11 years that I did not have morning chores. Because all my chickens are gone.
I will have to wait over the winter and clean with Chlorox before putting new chickens in the coop.
So it was hard to not have chores to do and I actually went out for coffee and just sat in the coffee shop for the distraction.
I hope you have other chickens that bring you joy.
One thing that helped me is knowing that most vets will give us a couple of choices and the choices they give us are reasonable and humane.
I'll bet your chicken had a great life. Mine did. God bless you!

Hi Everyone,

Today I noticed my wyandotte Dottie had a huge prolapse. I have never had this happen before and took her to the vet right away. She seemed like she was in a lot of pain and was all fluffed up with her eyes closed. She kept pushing and pushing and making noises when she did. I didn't know about the honey until now but it's to late. The vet wanted to do x-rays and suture her back up and send her home. I just didn't want her to suffer anymore and felt like the risk for infection was so high, I just didn't want her to have an even worse death from that. Now I feel like maybe I should have done more, she was my pet from 1 day old and now she is/was 3. I guess it's to late to be regretful. I just feel so terrible and can't stop crying. Was I barbaric to have her put down without trying the suturing?

Thanks for listening everyone
so sorry to hear about your hen,,,its such a hard thing to do, but we dont want them to suffer or be in pain either.....i had to have my hen Raven put down today she had a tumor that was growing, it started to make it so she couldnt jump up or down easily and she was starting to breathe hard,,,,,just feel so bad and now i will have one lonely hen,,,not sure what to do about getting her some new friends,,i know she wont like being by herself,,,not sure if we should get chicks or a little older chickens,,,you did what you felt you needed to do for her sake,,,be kind to yourself
