Just in the 'bator 17 Delaware, 4 Barred Rock, 4 BBS Orpingtons...more

Just wanted to let you all know, still only Del #3. Not even a pip out of anyone else. Del #3 is getting all her fluffy fuzz all over the other eggs.

HER fuzz?

Well, they should all be following along anytime now!

Come on Del babies (oh, and the rest of the gang too) !

HER fuzz?

All babies are HER until they give me a reason to call them HIM!

I feather sex them on day 2, and it is pretty accurate in fast growing breeds. Not as good on the Java's, but pretty accurate on the Delawares. Then I can start calling them Him/Her.

Aren't the Heritage breeds considered slow growing?

Have you has success feather sexing them, as well?

I can hardly wait to hear your hatching results, and see pictures!

Ok....

5:30 this AM dog woke me up..no pips, nothing.
8:30 I check no pips, nothing.
9:30 phone rings..annoyed, daughter rings doorbell coming back from Grammy and Poppy's for the night I let her in and mope back to bed. She comes in all Chipper...How many chicks did you have last night? 1. You have two now, a yellow and a black one. I rush out, sure enough the Fern Baby that Del #3 had been sleeping on is out! It was placed right next to the Del#3 egg in the bator and the cap of that egg had sat on top of it for a while.

I love this Del baby, she just wants to be next to whatever part of the incubator you are sitting near...looking out at you. Has since the moment she hatched.

Barred Rock Fern Baby is still in that sleepy wet stage. Many more pips in the hour since I went out to help load goats in the van to head to the vet. One of the twins born on the 1st has some eye issues. Possibly a turned in eyelid so off goes the whole family - milk has to go, so brother has to go.

Ok, home from all the usual Thursday stuff.....

We have hatched, two Dels (including Del #3.), Buff Orp (Smoky Baby), Fern Baby (as stated previously) a Java Chick. Multiple pips, but no zips currently.

I'll keep you posted. I've taken pics, just have to edit them down to post. BTW, the Java is another rare white, and the buff orp is a splash, thus I can't tell them apart!!! ROFL. Both look yellow with little grey patches! Unless the Buff orp wouldn't have any black on it's beak...if that is the case I know who the Java is?

Cool! Oh, the Smoky baby would be a blue/black/splash, not buff. Which color is it, can you tell? I don't know much about Javas. The splash would have either slate or white-looking legs, either one, since I get both color legs in my splashes (there's no standard for splash). What color legs do Javas have? I'll have to check.

I'm thinking it's a splash. I wasn't here when it hatched. So I can't tell which chick it is because it's not dark. I only have one dark chick and that is the Fern Baby.

So, I have it confused with the Java which is a white Java. Both chicks are yellow with grey patches. One has a darkish beak, the other a pink beak. I won't really know until they fluff out and I take them out of the incubator which is which I guess? I'll get pics up in a few minutes.
