Just looking for sympathy... hawk took silkie

sorry for your loss.

Having heavier chickens, imo sometimes helps. I had a hawk pick up my full 3 yr old plymouth rock, then dropped her, luckily she was okay (no injuries). Imo she was much too heavy. I wouldnt let my chickens free range for weeks. I have let them out this past week (they really enjoy being out of the run ) and sure enough they bless me with 3 brown eggs (they were on chicken strike and mad at me because they couldnt free range)) Anyways, hawks are very hungry right now.

I am so very sorry!
When I moved here to Georgia, I had hawks and the one day a hawk tried to fly into the barn. I was in the barn and I heard all the chickens yelling and came face to face with a coopers hawk. It did a double take and flew off. They do not come down low to the chickens anymore and the only thing I can figure out that is different is my barn cats are here. I had someone care for the cats and they came with our second load down here so they were not with the chickens when the hawk tried to fly into the barn. My cats live and hang with the chickens and I have no idea if they are deterring the hawks and keeping them away but that is the only thing I can think of that is different????

I am sooo sorry, they are so fast and silent. When mine are out now, they rarely go into the open, just stay under the bushes, lucky for me we have a lot of cover.

Thank you so very much everyone! I didn't expect so many people to show such wonderful support. I love BYC and all the kind folks here, and hope I can occasionally help others feel better as you all have helped me. I appreciate it!

So sorry to hear of your loss, we lost our favorite hen this week to a hawk also, sounds like she was alot like your little silkie. Would always run up to us as soon as we would come outside and follow us everywhere. We miss her

I have been told the hawk will be back so now my chickies are kept in the cage unless we are out there with them. My son just saw a hawk fly over as I am typing this! UGH! Hate those Hawks! Take Care, and keep those Chickies safe
