Just lost my first chick.........

I'm sorry you lost a chick, I did today too. Out of the 9 that I have, I've lost one and she was sickly a few hours after I brought her home. I tried Poultry Drench and vitamins & electrolytes. I'd keep those on hand in case you run into any other problems.

At least he died in a caring place! So Sorry!

Where would I get the vitamins and nutri drench? That might be a better idea if I have any others with a problem instead of the sugar water.
I bought my Nutri-Drench from eBay but I did see it at my TSC the last time I went. Vitamins are the Poly-vi-Sol without Iron given to newborn babies!
They have it at drug stores, Target, Walmart etc. I think the Nutri Drench is nice to have as part of a first aid kit even when they are older.
good luck and keep us posted

I am so sorry you lost a little one too........ So sad. I went to TSC this afternoon and got some Nutri Drench to have on hand in case anyone else has problems. But praying they will all continue to thrive. And I also made a trip to Rural King and looked at their babies. I couldn't resist--I came home with 2 RIR pullets!

On a side note--I hadn't named anyone yet but didn't want this little girl buried without one. I am calling her Angel. :)

Thank you Nancy for info about the Poly vi Sol. Will be picking that up this evening at Walgreens! I so appreciate everyone's input here!

I'm new to chicks. 3 years of wanting and finally everything came together. We had one that was "tired" all the time and didn't seem to be growing. We hand ground food, probiotics, everything we could find in the massive book collection I've amassed since my obsession began. After she died (much weeping and sorrow) we decided to replace her. The feed store still had a few from the same batch. My son said "follow your heart" so we ended up with 2 more. I read about chicken math, now I get it. The one that died was the only BR in our group (BO and EE) and when I looked at the BR at the store I realized her beak was different. I think that was the problem. The news Rock definitely has a different beak structure. Since she was the only one of that breed I didn't know. A few hours after the new one arrived I was convinced she had an impacted crop and was going to die too. Thank goodness there are enough posts saying don't panic. I think losing one so quickly helped me realize I can only do my best and learn to live with it.

It sure hurts to lose a little one but I know what you mean that you can only do your best. I guess sometimes no matter what we do they weren't destined to make it. I could spend hours out there watching them and sometimes when they are sleeping all stretched out I worry if they are OK. Don't panic is a very good motto to live by!!

A good motto but a hard motto! My motto is Curiosity killed the cat right? So just ask and stop being curious!
