I guess I should've posted here first. Well, I now have about three week old chicks (that I got when they were about three days old) that for the most part are happy healthy and thriving. They are a barnyard mix of who knows what - too many possibilities given the varied coloring, combs, feathering, etc. I am almost certain a couple are buff orpington, one little cockerel looks to be dominique, but who knows, several appear to be barred rock, and several I don't have a clue including one that at the moment appears to have no tail and another that has a small amount of feathering all the way down it's legs. In all there are 20 chickies residing in the 4x8 section of my living room with a heat lamp.
I'm a first time chicken raiser looking for some fresh eggs come spring. My wife and kids love them to death (almost literally), but so far I'm the one taking care of them. If I ask a dumb question or two please bear with me. I'm a city slicker moved to the country fresh from Los Angeles and grew up with a concrete backyard. Now I'm sitting on 3 acres that at least some of which will be populated by chickens come a month or two from now. I can't wait till my babies are all grown up and catching all the bugs they can find and producing some happy eggs for me as well. Hopefully, in time I can contribute and help some new feller along as well.
