Not molting I think, no feathers around. But I saw her squinting a few days ago, figured she’s sick or egg bound. In my experience birds die fast. So when I saw her on the ground, day before yesterday, I thought she was brooding. So I went over to find her with her roosters (2). And pulled her up to find no eggs. Since that first day when she was moving and squinting, she hasn’t eaten anything I’ve brought but idk if she’s not eating.

What do I do? Can’t bring her inside, I’ve got a baby.

What is going on with her beak? Is it full of feathers? I wonder if she has been injured in a fight. You can offer her some electrolytes in water with a little sugar but if she has internal injuries that’s a whole different thing.

I don’t think it was a fight, we don’t have any other roaming animals. She’s got two other males with her too and they do a good job. I’m thinking she got that from pruning cause those are soft feathers.

What do you think?

I was thinking a hawk. Perhaps she fought one off. I would think the roosters would step in but without being there we can’t know. It seems very odd to me that she would keep feathers from preening or an attack in her mouth like that. Will she let you handle her?

Yeah i just took her home, she’s sat in a flower pot. We don’t have hawks here actually, im down in Miami. You think she’s egg bound?

Can she stand up and walk if you lift her up? It looks like she has a very short beak, possibly trimmed,) and her eye might have been injured because of the squinting. Does she have bubbles or any gunk in her eye? Can you see her eyeball, and get a picture when you open it? I would put a little Terramycin eye ointment, or plain Neosporin ointment into her eye 2-3 times a day. She might be dehydrated and weak from not eating if she has been injured or broody. I would offer her very watery chicken feed and some scrambled egg 2 times a day. If she was broody and got too weak, she may need to be broken inside a dog crate with food and water.

Not standing. No bubbles in eye. Moving her head but won’t open eyes. Eyeball looks in tact for both sides, I’ll try to get a photo in the evening or tomorrow. Dehydrated I think so because they roam the suburbs, so I’ve given her electrolytes.

How would you suggest offering food when she won’t open her eyes or stand?

She’s not automatically drinking when her beak gets wet, or has droplets. So I open her mouth and inject a bit. I’m not sure how to feed in that instance other than maybe oatmeal puree if you suggest that.

I’m not sure about beak trim? The top is shorter than the bottom, that’s for sure.

Sometimes beaks are trimmed short on top to prevent pecking damage, but it is hard to know for sure. I think some hatcheries sell started pullets that way. Yes, I would offer the mushy wet feed up to her beak. Since she is not standing or walking, she will starve to death if not fed. I prefer to offer it up to their beaks, and let them take it themselves. You can also put small pieces of torpedo shaped food into her beak to swallow. Tube feeding is a third alternative.
