Just ordered goslings! Update: THEY'RE HERE!

I would still make sure they have a secure enclousure to lock them up at night. Birds can not see well in the dark. No matter how protective they are or can be during the day...nightime is another story.

Sure that is why you often hear geese flying over in the dead of night honking "where-are-we? & "are-we-there-yet"

Well mine have lasted these last 4 years day and night when the coyotes were at their worst. I'm not too worried about them.

The new geese, it's still up in the air about them.

I was at the beach.. But now I'm back.

The geese won't be free-ranging unless we're home, as we live on a highway. They'll have a brand-new VERY LARGE pen that they'll share with the chickens. And they have a coop, which the foxes don't get into. So I'm not worried about that.

I know our foxes don't come in packs either, so that's no big deal.

We're beefing up our security anyways, the geese aren't our only protection. We just decided that our chickens will probably run into an electric fence, and the electric fence is more expensive than the geese. They'll be pets. I will love them, regardless if they are attack dogs or just watch dogs. My mom wants them for her garden. So I don't expect to be disappointed at all.

Jojo - We ordered 3 toulouse goslings (one gander, two geese) from Metzer Farms in California. They'll be here the 24th, hopefully. I'm excited for them.. And just realized that that's in TEN DAYS! I will soon be the Mother Goose! Yay!

Wow, you are just sliding in under the wire for goslings (grin) most everywhere else is out of available goslings. The birds quit laying about June first for the most part.

Congrats.

I know.. I'm glad I decided I wanted goslings in late May, as opposed to now. I had no idea that they had a really short breeding season, as compared to chickens. I felt so lucky!

Now, hooooopefully they'll get here.. I just want 'em. My PO is used to chicks, but I wonder what they'll say when we they get a larger peeping box. xD

So, with a week until the goslings come, I've been thinking about how we should identify them. They'll be pets, so is there any reason I shouldn't use cat collars on them? I found the extra-safe breakaway ones.

I don't know. I've never really looked at a cat collars - I guess I need to. The image of geese wearing collars is cute. I don't know how safe...but, if they are breakaway collars...? I've seen picutes of geese that wear clothing while out walking around and grazing.

The ID thing may not be too hard...somehow they always end up looking slightly different anyway - and then there's the personality thing...that will set them apart too.

I can tell you're really excited! And you should be...I think you'll enjoy them! You must keep us posted...

I dunno, I was cleaning up the other day and found my cat's old kitten collar.. And I started thinking, "Hey. Wouldn't it be ADORABLE if the geese wore collars?" I think it would be, at least. I think I'm having my mom pick some up. Three different colors, and then it'll be easy to tell them apart as they get bigger. I saw that someone painted their toes to tell them apart, so I'll probably do that while they're small, if the collars don't fit. It's worth a try, at least!
