Just ordered goslings! Update: THEY'RE HERE!

So, what did you order and where did you order them from? Can't wait to hear the details. I'm planning on moving my 4 Sebbies out to the barn this weekend. They're really growing and doing great. I'll have to post pictures. It's been really busy and I just haven't gotten to it - yet.

Sadly, from past experience make sure your geese if free ranging can not stick their head through the fence into the dog yard. Our grown Seebie we lost because he hated dogs and it never occurred to me that he would go thru the fence. Our flock of seebie and pilgrims now can free range because we enclosed the dog yard in chicken wire. You will love how your geese imprint on you and start "talking" to you when they see you !!

There are such different temperaments between the breeds of geese. I tend to keep the more laid back, quiet geese...dewlap toulouse and sebastopol and I can tell you that they will only make noise when a predator enters the area, they will try to run, too. But, they do not attack anything.

I had toulouse in the past because they were given to my by a friend who had predator problems and the toulouse were not aggressive enough to protect themselves. They cannot move fast enough to get away from most fox or raccoons and from my experience, they will just be attacked and killed themselves.

Someone told me that they kept guineas because they frightened away predators, but my neighbors are too close for that much noise. I'd be very interested to find out if you can train toulouse geese to attack other animals. Mine were way too mild mannered for that and my dewlap toulouse are more likely to die from a heart attack from trying to escape before the predators could get them, they are such cowards.

But, that's why I chose them and love them so much.

I have never had geese in the past or been around them.
My daughter ask me if she could get 1 one day.
Being in a good mood I said yes. after reading about them as pets I decided to hatch my own, because blogs I read said they would be better pets if you hatched them I bought the incubators. I now have 2 SEBASTABLEs 2 weeks old.
What I geuss I didn't read is how much they poop.
keeping up with cleaning thier cage is a chore.
I'm currently building a pin and a fenced area to put them in.
I need to get them out of the house.
They are cute though...

We don't have coyotes here on Long Island, but we have fox and raccoon and possum. My geese don't love dogs, but they do not attack my Saint Bernards when they come around, they just run from the dogs. But, the dogs are only curious, not interested in catching the geese.

My dews are big cowards, I guess.

I have tape from my security cameras of my one lone China x goose chasing off a fox. 5 times actually, on 2 occasions I was home and when she saw me she ran and hid behind me, the other 3 times she chased it off her lawn but would not go into the tall grass after it. BTW the fox finally got her while setting on her nest one night, that was why I quit free ranging 24/7. I got a note from my power co meter reader thanking me for confining the geese, seems they would attack him when he had to read the meter.
That having been said, if the attacker is a pack (2 or more dogs or coyotes) they are likely to have goose for supper even if facing a flock of geese. One will keep their attention while the other makes a sneak attack from the side or back. The greater speed of the attackers works well for this tatic(sp)

Well I guess we are only having single coyotes then as I havn't lost a goose in the whole 4 years I have lived here thank goodness. I am hoping the big pasture/pens I am constructing will keep out coyotes cause I wanted to keep older babies in there with a couple of adults to supervise.
