I paid $75 for 6 bantam Houdan eggs last spring. I ended up with two roosters and two hens. Sold the extra rooster and the nicest of the two new hens managed to get outside after dark and froze to death in the run. They are the dumbest chickens I have but so funny and sweet....sighs. LOL
I have kind of given up on hatching eggs. I have decided it's better and cheaper (in the long run) to just save up and buy a pair or whatever you need/want....otherwise, they might not hatch at all, you might end up with one VERY expensive rooster OR if you do get a decent hatch, you still have to brood them, feather them out, sex them and then decide who/what you're keeping. So if you spend $150 - $200 on a nice pair, you're still saving money rather than buying $100/dozen eggs only to have to wait 6 months or longer to feed/water/care for them before sexing them and making your culls...that's just my experience. Of course, in some instances (like these bantam Houdan), you can't find anyone breeding & willing to ship adults. So that's a risk I had to take.
