Hello all!! I am new to chickens and have found this forum very helpful. As I stated I’m just starting my flock and have 6 pretty, what I hope are all pullets. We have decided on a blend of breeds, and all bigger girls.. no bantams. So far I have an Americana Easter Egger, Buff Orpington, Barred Cochin, Buff Brahma, Sapphire Gem and a Rhodes Island Red. These girls just moved out into the coop and we’re getting the brooder ready for a second batch of beauties. Considering a Black Austrolorp, Lavender Orpington, an Isa Brown, Prairie Bluebell Egger and maybe a Blue Laced Wyandotte, possibly another Easter Egger of some sort. I have a large well insulated coop, with a very large closed in Run, lost of room for these already spoilt cheeky chicks. I’m thinking 10 is a good number, no more then 12 and am not really looking for a Roo, as I’m not sure about breeding and hatching yet. However if we get one.. he’ll be the king. Hopefully we won’t get two... yikes. Just trying to have a good time and take good care of a few pretty Hens. I’m in Montana so I’m also learning to deal with some varying weather and I want to do my best with these chicks!! Got my books, got my BYC’s page, got a love for these chicks and I’m ready to enjoy and give them a good life!!

Hi there! Have your tried brooding with a heat plate or Mama Heating Pad yet? It's so much healthier and natural when chicks are exposed to the cooler room temperature air and only receive heat when they choose it themselves, and they can also sleep quietly through the night and have empty crops in the morning.
