We are about to start our little "farm" with 10 chicks, and will add two female African pygmy goat kids in a month or two. My father did the same 25 years ago, including breeding his goats several times, and is helping us get started. Debating the chicken breed to get started. We want them to be friendly, as we have baby grandchildren who will visit, and good layers. We are not planning to use them for meat. We are leaning toward Golden Comets, but would like a mixed flock to add some interest. Would a few Rhode Island Reds and Plymouth Rocks work? My dad is leaning toward what is most available asap at the local places (Lancaster County, PA). Looking forward to gathering lots of info here on the forums. Karen and family

hey there from Salisbury N.C. welcome to the flock .I started with what they had a the feed store, just last friday i got my first flock and hey are Silver Laced Wyandottes, usally the local feed store will stock breeds that are tryed and true for the area,So i just went with that but i found out what they were getting in the next week thats how I ended up with S.L.W I done some reading on them available in the Learning center of this site and found some really helpful information,as the S.L.W is a very docile breed, and really good for starters.I'm really happywith my new flock even though they are only a week old.
