Hi all,

Just wanted to let you know that I got a restitution check for $10 yesterday . That was for my hen that was killed on Christmas Eve by someone's loose dog. The money doesn't matter. I'm just glad that something was done about it. The man had to drive back here (Indiana, Pa) from Philly for the hearing and now has a misdemeanor to his name. So much for him calling them "just a bunch of chickens!"

I did some research and made a few calls about this, and since I don't live in town, I can legally shoot a dog if it comes in my yard without giving the owner a warning. THis is because I have my property posted too. If you're having problems with dogs, check your local dog warden for the correct information.

Doesn't bring Beep back, but at least those people didn't get away with the murder completely.

Thanks for your support and I hope y'all are having a warm winter...

Val

I'm glad some sort of justice was done and the dog owner was held accountable. It's hard for a lot of people to understand these aren't 'just chickens'. For some of us, these are our pets as well as productive farm animals and they do have worth.

my neighbors starve their dogs. they have a couple females that drop puppies over and over again.. at one time they had close to 30 dogs that i could count until mange hit them and killed off all of them except 5. then they had more puppies!!! Our favorite chicken and a couple others were killed a couple days ago. ive avenged 2 of their deaths already.. They had the nerve to tell me!!, "well their dogs you should have those chickens in a pen" i told them i was going to shoot every dog that i seen in my yard from here on out, i refuse to pen my chickens up on my own property because of a negligent dog owner. this is my property! we are dog lovers too, we understand their just starved but their not our responsibility. once one of their mutts got hit by a car and i watched their son throw the dead dog onto my property!! i casually walked down my drive and threw the dog as hard as i could against their front screen door which made a really loud bang!! since then, if their dogs get hit they will lay there in the road until they decompose.. i always end up getting the dog up and moving it out of the road. bones pop tires like glass... i live in a very small town, way outside of city limits.. in my state or area at least, the redneck run animal control and sheriff's dept wont come out to investigate the negligence.. In the city of monroe, about 30 minutes from me, you see horses tied to trees on 6 ft of lead... for very long periods of time... nobody does anything about it.. i lived in texas at one time and that would not be tolerated there! especially the horses.. im so sick of people like that.. like my neighbor.. in a small town community what could the sheriff's dept be doing? i know they aint busy, it just blows my mind. i wish there was something else i could do.Anyways! Im happy you were compensated for your loss, my neighbor is waiting court for 23 counts of forgery!! so i didnt ask for payment.. big newspaper ad about that wrench.. $10 does not suffice, but the long trip he had to make and lost time off from work surely hurt his pocketbook. You know, ive owned expensive exotic reptiles, k9s, birds.. cattle and horses.. but ive never been more upset about one of my animals dying.. I was screaming at the top of my lungs at those fools across the road. Im sorry for your loss :/ RIP BEEP.. and all my chickens too.

Is there no Humane Society there where you are. This is animal abuse to the max. Call the police, call the newspaper, call all the vets around and maybe someone can humanely euthanize them. This is just wrong. Call the ASPCA......Good luck

these redneck law officials around here are barnie fifes. they wont investigate because its out of city limits. it disgusts me. I think the closest humane society is hours away in shreveport.

While I understand that it is your right to free range your chickens on your property, it is also your responsibility to keep them safe. That may mean keeping them in a secure run until the dog problem is solved. Let's pretend they were being taken by hawks, eagles, or some other protected animal that you can't legally kill. Would you still refuse to pen them up, knowing that you will lose more to that predator?

Have the same issue out in this area. My in-laws have a neighbor who keep thirty-plus dogs as well. Animal hoarders is what they are. They constantly have puppies and there have been issues of cannibalism, they would chase cars and pedestrians anytime they passed the house. The only thing that the county has done is make sure that the animals finally are no longer running loose since there is a cemetery across the street and folks weren't able to bury their loved ones in peace without being attacked and harassed. In addition, they just make sure that they all had their rabies shots which the Humane Society helped with. I know that is the only one any of them have.

Those dogs bark CONSTANTLY and my in-laws have called to report them as nuisance dogs to no avail over the years. In addition, my mother-in-law's mother passed last year so she has been trying to sell her mother's home which is right next to the "Dog House" with no luck. FIVE potential buyers who loved the house walked away once they learned of the dogs. They are now concerned that the only kind of people who will buy the house are other animal hoarders at this point.
