It had been a long week. Tylisia stepped out of her newly-found tree hollow and yawned, after just waking up from an afternoon nap. A thick layer of white clouds hung in the sky...The sun had been shining out earlier, and she wished that it still was. She ruffled her feathers as a cool breeze flowed passed her, carrying leaves along with it. Now, the leaves on the trees were beginning to completely fall off. She looked around the forest; what had once been a dense, green forest was now a field of thin, dried sticks with barely any colorful foliage clinging to their shabby branches. The only trees that made up for all the trees that had lost their foliage were the fir trees. There pine needs became slightly brown, but they stayed full and thick as usual. This offered Tylisia some comfort; she disliked being out in the open for a long time, especially when the Pure Ones were lurking more around this time. She needed at least some foliage to stay hidden from danger in order to feel safer.
Tylisia pushed any thoughts of the Pure Ones away, and returned back into her new tree hollow. Inside, it was not too big, but not too small. The floor was littered with feathers and leaves, which she had recently laid down in order to soften it and make it more comfortable. The walls were thick and kept any strong wind and cold out. The entrance was a bit of a squeeze, but that would help keep snow and wind out during the winter, and outside of the entrance was a nice branch for her to perch on if she just wanted to sit outside of her hollow. There was a small corner in the hollow where she could temporarily store away freshly-caught meals, and of course the flooring of the hollow was slightly curved inward, like a dish but still mostly flat. It was perfect for her to line with downy feathers when she wanted to make a nest in the spring.
Tylisia, out of boredom, used her beak to gently preen her feathers. Several loose downy feathers fell out, and she placed them down to arrange them with the rest on the floor of the hollow. By now, after all the touches she had added to it to make it more homey and more comfortable, it nearly felt like the hollow she had grown up in. She copied the same method her mother had used when arranging downy feathers and when keeping it clean. And, like all owls do when they find their own tree hollow and claim it as their own, she used her sharp beak and talons to carefully scratch her name in the bark above the entrance hole. Now, it felt much more homey and like her own.
Tylisia wondered what her other owl friends were up to...She hadn't heard from them in a while, and the next day was something called "Halloween". It was a holiday, or a day to celebrate something, and her parents said that it was what the humans and many other creatures celebrated once every year on October 31st. They told her that what happened was all the adult owls in a kingdom would hunt and collect as many mice, voles, crickets, centipedes, and any other yummy treats that owls loved and keep them stored away in their tree hollow. At night, when dark fell, all the younger owls would dress up and fly around the forest, stopping at tree hollows and receiving a treat from the owl who lived there. For dressing up, they would wear hats made from leaves, fake battle claws, wooden shields and helmets, acorn necklaces, and large, goofy glasses made from twigs. It was always so much fun to do. Tylisia had never done it before, since in the Forest Kingdom of Tyto they never celebrated Halloween unless they visited the kingdom Tylisia was at now or any other owl kingdom. Tylisia was not considered an owlet anymore, and since she had her own tree owl, she decided she would collect a lot of treats to give away to all the owlets who stopped by at her tree hollow.
And so, with an excited flutter in her gizzard, she flew out of her tree hollow and into the forest in search of treats for Halloween.
