That's very true! Goldens are great dogs but I do wonder if they can do lots of tricks? They probably would have the energy to do agility? Or at least nosework and dock diving? Although the hip dysplasia and cancer in the breed does concern me.

Also this video and some of the comments below it like the gas station one do concern me and have me thinking maybe I DO need a protective dog after all.

 
Also ordered some raw food for Gator cause FSIL got some free samples from a company she visited yesterday for work and it inspired me lol but I didn't get that brand, forgot what brand it was, but got another called Hare Today.

:sick I don't buy into the whole raw is better thing. In my reading dogs can get really sick eating raw and it isn't balanced. But everyone has their own opinion on feeding dogs. If you like it do it. I give mine rawhides under supervision, and people will go nuts over that too. :idunno

Well, I didn't get him much, just a little bit to try it, but we've given him the occasional raw thing before, like a chicken leg or something, and he does seem to perk up so idk. It is kind of gross to feed though and time consuming plus expensive for his size so I don't think I'd do it long term, maybe just occasionally or as a supplement or treat, but idk. I'm sure dogs can get sick though if it's not properly balanced or properly sourced which is another reason I wouldn't do it permanently because it's really hard to make sure you're giving balanced meals with all the proper nutrients and not giving any in excess or causing a deficiency. But there are a lot of companies that sell balanced and/or premeasured meals now that make it much easier to be sure you're giving them the right amounts of stuff. And I'm not sure I'd feed them the cheapest stuff from the store or whatever but this stuff is mostly grown on their farm or by the neighbors so I think it'll be safe. But I still don't think I'd do it long term. I think some of the issues also come from mixing kibble and raw because they digest at totally different rates which can make some dogs sick. So you're supposed to either not feed kibble or feed them like 5 or 12 hours apart

Hm, that makes sense. I was actually concerned about that with show bred Aussies too. Cause they seem bigger boned than BCs. But then a lot of the pictures of the Goldens doing agility seem to be show ones so idk. But that's another reason I thought that field breeder or field/show would be a good combo/option. I definitely wouldn't want any dog to be injured but I also would likely mostly be doing it for fun and low level trials and don't expect to be doing high level national and international stuff so hopefully there's less risk with just the occasional trial rather than serious competition? Idk though. Maybe not. Definitely a lot of sharp turns and fast movement but some of that exists in hunting too. I do think field bred ones would at least be faster. Definitely a lot to consider. I'm planning on going to a bunch of dog shows and agility trials and asking around about breeders and stuff, maybe make an account on the Golden forum. No matter what I pick though, I gotta pay attention to the structure/how it's built and planning to keep it really fit/conditioned/in shape to hopefully help minimize or avoid injuries but the bigger boned dogs are definitely more prone to them which is a concern. I joined a couple structure groups on FB, including a performance one, to learn more. I'm going to try to do what I can to minimize risk though but choosing the right breed and the right breeder is definitely the best way/most important part and if I'm going to do agility, a Golden may not be the best breed, or at least not a show bred one, but I just don't know yet. Although they do say that early spaying and neutering of large breed dogs can cause a lot of problems, mostly neutering of males, but affects females too. One of the problems is ACL/ligament/tendon injuries are more common and they also get taller, lankier, less filled out, than non fixed counterparts, and recently learned apparently they also mantain the puppy mentality if they're neutered too early and service dogs have a higher rate of washing out because of that if they're fixed before 18 months. So hopefully by waiting that will also minimize risk. But it's also just basic physiology, bigger dogs just plain aren't as agile and can't move as fast as small dogs. So it's a tricky thing cause I love Goldens and Aussies. So idk. But if it can't do agility or doesn't like it, that's not a huge issue or dealbreaker cause I still wanna do other sports like Rally, Dock Diving, Nosework, and possibly regular Obedience so plenty else to keep us occupied lol so it's definitely a challenge and a balance finding a dog that can do all of that because I also want a friendly, good tempered dog, and I don't want to pick a dog that only excels at agility or rather like pick it because it's small and agile but then it's lacking in personality or trainability for the other stuff. So idk. Sorry, yet again, for the novel. :lau
