Keep or rehome rooster?

Here's an update on Rudy. A friend came over the other day and caught Rudy for me. He is now in "prison" (dog crate placed in the run -- mainly for protection from predators). My friend said to leave him in there for a few weeks and it should reform him. Jury is still out on that thought. He also said not to put Peebles and Rose (sex-link hens) in with Peaches anytime soon. She hunkers near him in his cage and he "yells" at her when she goes to the far side. It is kind of funny to watch.

A question I have is, if/when I get rid of Rudy when should I put Peebles and Rose in with Peaches? She will need companionship after he leaves, correct? She has always been with someone for the past 1 1/2 years. Won't she be lonely? Still learning. Now with Rudy caged I can get a good cleaning done on the run and coop. At least one good thing came of this.

I wonder if you and your son spend lots of cuddle time with peaches in view of the roo will help. Show him that you 'own' her and not him may be the ticket to taking him down a notch. Give her treats and make her come to respect you more than him.then when he gets out on parole make a point of your dominance over him again and that peaches is yours and not his. And maybe then try putting them all together again. Might let peaches spend some time with the others while he is in jail right now too

You have an special needs son who is scared of the rooster
You can't turn your back on the rooster
Your rooster is hard on your chickens
Your husband wants him gone yesterday
You have been trying, without success, for 4 months to change this rooster's behaviour
You need to have two separate coops/areas because of the rooster

V's

we like to hear him crow
he is a pet

Make your life easier, re-home this rooster. Are you waiting on him to really hurt your son, or yourself?

Don't tell me to kill the rooster. You have got to be kidding me. He's a mean thing that has attacked several times. It's not about killing him. It's the completion of his purpose. Yes the chickens are pets. I get that. I love my chickens too. But they also serve a great purpose. FOOD. Eating him isn't mean or wrong. It's the circle of life. Eat him for dinner and thank him for the nourishment. That's a good and right thing to do. It's what they were put on the earth for. Then go get another roo. But don't rehome him because that would just be giving a mean animal to someone else. Or you could give him to someone else to eat.
