Keeping 2 cockerels...trouble?

They may fit in a smaller coop, but you would have pecking problems. It's not what we think is enough space, it's what the chickens need.
No pecking problems here at all. They really only go in the coop to sleep and use the nesting boxes. Only about 8 sq ft of my dang coop gets used. So frustrating!

BUT I would never ever go that small. Just wish I'd not built such a monster of a coop.

Didn't you say you have 32 sf for 5 chicken? That's about 6 1/2 sf per chicken. That's why you're not having pecking problems.

Where are you located? You can add it to your profile. Where I am, the coldest it gets is in the low 40's F. Zero snow. Not a lot of rain, really, either. That's what makes the difference. I built a huge walk in coop. I could have gone so much smaller.... But not if I lived anywhere else, I think.
I’m in British Columbia, in the southern interior. By the sounds of your weather you might be on the west coast too! We’ll get as low as 5 degrees and snow will start soon and stick around until April!

I'm in California, so, yes, West Coast. BC is too cold for a small coop, imo. I'd def go larger.

But I love visiting British Columbia! Soooo beautiful!!!

Yes, but they only step foot into it after dark. Honestly. I wouldn't deprive them, but I know my flock. There wouldn't be a pecking problem because they are only in there a teensy weensy amount of time at night. I have 3 nesting boxes, too. Could've gone with one. And it's a walk-in. But I agree it wouldn't be ideal for most places or most flocks. It's the covered run that makes the difference.

I think perhaps in CA, if the coop is always open to the run, they could use a smaller coop. In my experience, when I decided to go from 6 to 12 chickens in a coop big enough for 8, I had to increase my coop size. I've had to do this a couple times until now we are building one 8x10 coop, so we can be done with building coops. Then I will have 1 8x4 sf coop with 8 external nesting boxes, 2 4x4 coops, and an 8x10 where hopefully they can all live together in harmony. Part of adding smaller coops was to separate aggressive hens wounding the docile ones. So, chicken math is also coop math around here. :barnie I would never regret a coop that's too big. :D Better to start off with that instead of ending up with a condo complex of coops.

Very cute! I can see why you want to keep them. I have two very young cockerels also, and hope to keep them both. I will only have 10 pullets and hens, so not sure it will work here either. But, I have the space to keep a bachelor pad if I need to.
