keeping chickens cool in hot weather

106 degrees today, and that's without the heat index figured in!!

I stuck a few of my younger birds in one of our bathrooms. I shut the others up in the main run - had two fans going, frozen water jugs set in front of them (didn't last long), ice in the water pans, and set the hose to spray a fine mist. Thankfully much of this run is shaded. They seemed to do okay. After more than a week straight of double digits, we're ALL ready for a break...

My coop has a...
Window
Fan
Wet ground in the run
Shade
Cold water

If u have any things u can change let me know

And I am bring all my chickens to fair
In the hot summer how to I keep them cool in the small cages at fair and do u think a small fan will help at fair and will they let me do that and how will I do it

And how do I post pics on to this website from a iPod and how do I make a thred.

Thank for any help

I have small pools of water and ice in the run. I also put things in the water to entice them to play and splash around! Like rose petals and mint or edible flowers and clover. They love it!

we use a solar fan that kicks in when the coop reaches 75 degrees (no electricity needed).

we also add ice to their water to keep it cool. when watermelon is cheap we buy a few as a treat. we also feel frozen organic berries and peaches. they seem to really enjoy the treats.

our chickens are out on the property roaming free from dawn until dusk and on hot days (we are currently in a 7 day heat wave) they hide under the pine trees. i spray a little water to cool the ground, but not saturate. they seem to like that. we also water down the coop's roof before the sun goes down to help the coop cool off before the go to bed.

we are in the northeast and the solar fan is taken out in the colder months and replaced with the wood siding originally cut out and that piece overs the hole with a piece of added rubber to help seal it in the winter.

i hope this helps.

I like to freeze watermelon rinds to give to the chickens. They Percy at it, and stand on it. Also, you could freeze a water bottle for them to lay next to

That is such a great idea!!!!
I just purchased a kiddie pool and will add some cold treats to entice my hens and chicks to get in and cool off. We are having such an awful summer (what's new?) and anything that can help them is very welcome.
I have small pools in the run too and I a put a frozen bottle of water in them, they love to stand in the water and groom while in here.
This Friday I am installing a mister system with a booster pump that brings the water pressure to 160 PSI. The droplets are smaller so there is less water wetting the ground. I will make a report of how it works after I have a few days of running the misters.
