Keeping chickens out of garden?

I need to put a fence up around my garden to keep out my chickens, so I can let them roam. How high do I need to make my fence? Does it need to be 4-5' high or would 2-3' deter them? I love the look of my neighbor's fence, which is just a 2-3' narrow picket fence with scalloped tops. They have 32 chickens, 21 ducks, 2-3 turkeys, a goose, a peacock, and 3 peahens and I never see anything in their garden. Are they just lucky or would this fence be adequate?

Mine is 3 ft high chicken wire and it deters them from the garden just fine. In fact, I think having a wooden picket fence *might* encourage them to fly over because they can fly to the top and hold on before flying to the other side. They can't see the top of my chicken wire fence and there's nothing to grip up there.

By the way, I've seen this thread on here over and over, so you should probably do a search for "fence" AND "garden".

Thanks for the perspective about them not seeing the top of your fence.

I appreciate your patience - on lists I've been on for years, one does see the same questions come up over and over and it always irritates me when people don't do searches first. I did do a search before posting my question - I tried "garden fence," "garden AND fence" and just garden/fence alone. I got 13 pages of replies and looked through the first few pages but those didn't really apply.

My fence is 5 feet wire and keeps the girls from my garden and my dogs. Perhaps you might discuss the options with your neighbor....might be nice to have someone close who has chicken interest....aside from this site of course.

Thanks for letting us know that you've already tried to search. It's not always easy, I know.

If you're familiar with a Boolean search, in the search box you can type "garden" AND "fence". Try that exactly as I have it with quotes around each separate word and caps for the AND. Also, at the bottom of the search page, click on Posts, not Topics. That will prevent you from having tosearch through lots of pages. Hope that helps.
