Keeping Chickens When You Have Arthritis.

Pics
I read about it but my whole flock has it, so hoping for immunity going forward. Will vaccinate any new chickens in future.
It does not seem like they build immunity. The vaccine works for 6 months so it is best to figure out when the yearly outbreak is and vaccinate a couple of months before then.

If you do not have many of them die I suppose you can live with it though

So, I have a tip for all my arthritis sufferers..... not actually chicken related but anything that reduces our work load is a good thing.
So I was having a couple good days..... I have been trying to improve my diet and on days when I feel bad, it is hard to eat healthy as I don’t feel like cooking. So in my good days I marinated chicken and cut up pork loin in a bunch of different flavors overnight. The next day I baked multiple pans of chicken and slow roasted the pork plain. Each different flavor of pork loin was wrapped in its own foil and then all were roasted in my slow cooker all day.
I then separated the meat into individual meal sized vacuum freezer bags and froze. I stocked the freezer with a ton of different frozen steam in the bag veggies. I put up nearly 30 meals of meat. Now, dinner is quick and easy! Put frozen meat in fridge in am.... warm it for dinner and steam up some veggies! I also bought some nice lean ham steaks ( just enough for dinner) they are precooked and only need to be warmed.
Last night we had a baked seeet potato, ham with pineapple chunks and steamed peas! Took all of 15 min to make a healthy dinner!!! What you see in the pic is grillmates citrus chicken, lime chicken, mustard chicken, BQ chicken, herb chicken!
I had to stop my prednisone and methotrexate due to a skin infection recently ( actually feel better off the meds). I have been having IBS symptoms and “unhealthy” foods have been making me very sick to my stomach.... MD apt made. I have decided to concentrate on healing my gut! Taking supplements and probiotics and eating a strict anti-inflammatory diet. So far it seems to be helping my arthritis!!! My pain levels are cut in half and my energy is up!
Ps sorry for all typo!

What a great idea !

@Kfults, have you ever tried ginger root for your stomach? It works wonders on mine when it acts up. I use capsule form. Also for IBS Greek yogurt and fermented foods. For me, sauerkraut sets things straight so to speak.

Chicken is high on the 'anti-inflammatory' diet for me also. And if you are worried about your calcium levels steer clear of red meat. Your body actually wastes calcium in order to digest red meat. Poultry and fish are the preferred meats.

I haven't posted in a while. My last trip to the rheumatologist went well. He is pleased with my progress although he informed me that on top of the borderline RA and osteoarthritis, I also have ankylosing spondylitis. I had a bone density test done and then they coated the first three 'itises' with osteoporosis and osteopenia.

Yeah, gotta admit I was a tad bummed. AS is a progressive disease and with Osteoporosis, my lifting is limited to 20-25 pounds. I spent a few weeks feeling sorry for myself then DH set down with me and pointed out how I could modify my activities to suit my bones. Today he drove my 150 pounds of feed up to the coop in the van, helped me unload it and then turned it over to me to dip out feed and mix it in the big garbage can I use. I'm using my farm wagon, wheelbarrow and three wheeled cart more, and even managed to clean two coops using a US Mail tote which is about the size of a bushel basket and holds about 25 pounds of litter when full. All I had to do was shovel, tote the tote, dump it, repeat until finished. I made more trips but realized, hey, this isn't a race.

Things are pretty much back to normal now....with modifications, but isn't that what it's all about? Keeping our favorite feathered fiends in spite of our aches and pains?

I understand having 4 types of arthritis also but do it in stages not all at one time moved 2 marans pullets and one cockerel from Silky coop to my empty coop but 1 at a time
but now just silky in their coop for the new hatch on 2nd or 3rd of Nov

Yeah, makes me glad that as bad as I would love to have another horse, there is no way I could take care of it the way I did when I was in my 20s. Still, every time I drive by one of our Amish neighbor's fields and see the little steel gray filly with black face, mane, tail and socks that was born this spring........Yeah, I sigh and keep on driving.

These days, chickens are more my speed.
