Would the hardware cloth guarantee predators from not chewing the wire and able to take my chicks?

As long as it's secured correctly to the wood, yes. They'd break their teeth before they could chew through the wire.

What kind of traps would be recommended?

Can you borrow a Raccoon trap? I found 3 neighbors who loaned me traps--caught a female and her 3 half grown young! Had one neighbor who owned one of the traps, shoot them within the traps. (And they even took the carcasses! GOOD NEIGHBORS--they get nice fresh eggs as gifts!) Raccoons climbed over wire fence and tore through the netting I have over the outside pens--and killed 6 birds during the daytime--unusual, as they most often come at night! My birds are safe in the houses at night However, if there are any signs of raccoon, I will borrow traps again! Good luck...

Check on Amazon or online, much cheaper than in the stores. No idea if tractor supply has it. Menards, Home Depot and Lowes here don't carry 50 foot rolls.
