keeping neighbors dogs off the property, what kind of dog can i get?

Why not just call animal control, or drop the dogs off at the pound if there isn't an animal control option in your area?
You stated that your neighbors barely feed the dogs, which is outright neglect in my mind. And, if the neighbor is telling you to hit them with a pellet gun, paintball gun or outright shoot them, how much do they care about the poor things anyway? Why not give them the option of being adopted by someone who'll love and take care of them or be humanely euthanized?

This post isn't meant to offend, I just don't get this mentality. Why keep something if you aren't going to care for it properly. I have 2 dogs, who I take great care to keep at home because they are precious to me. If they were to wander, I would hope my neighbors would come to me and let me know about it, so I could take care of the issue (and not shoot them with a pellet or paintball gun). Obviously I care about my four legged friends more than your neighbor does theirs, but these are living beings we're talking about here. You could do them a real favor by ending their suffering and give them a chance at finding a loving home that gives them companionship and the nourishment they require.

Happy New Year, best of luck with the whole situation.

Lot of great suggestions but I fear none will be taken. An animal lover does not think it's ok to see a starving dog and then on top of starving you want to shoot at it as well as poison it. Appalling. Do the right thing and call animal control or the police I'm sure either will get your problem solved. I won't share my experiences with my dogs due to the fact that there are bigger issues here than a fence or guard dog.

It's hardly ever that black and white in the real world...

I care greatly for animals in general but I will not hesitate to defend my animals with lethal force from a predator even if it's the neighbors 'starving' dog...

Also when calling animal control although your hands might be 'clean' of the act, if the owner doesn't care about the animal and thus does't pay and claim the animal within a few days time (at least in my area) the end result a majority of the time is the same...

It really bothers me that some owner cares so little about his dogs that he would think, even less say that, rather than be responsible enough to keep his own dogs home where they are safe or better yet spend some quality time bonding with and training them. People like that shouldn't even have dogs.
It's one thing if a dog gets out accidently but to allow them to roam and to hold this mindset boggles my mind.
I guess I'm just used to associating with people whose dogs are family.
Being picked up by animal control couldn't be any worse than the situation in which they are now "living."

We are having neighbor dog issues as well. It is so frustrating to have someone else's irrisponsibility intrude on your life. It's not the animals fault and we are trying to be good neibors and kind to the animals, but my girls come first. Invest in fencing as soon as possible, that's what we are saving for and until then keep a close eye on your flock. Our nuisance dogs are slipping under barbed wire and so far stand on our property and bark at us. A good scolding usually sends them on their way.
You can electrify barbed wire, too. Get some insulators, put them on your posts (it can be tricky, but is possible), put in a ground rod, get the fencer and there ya go! If needed, put a strand below what they're crawling through so they can't get over, under, or in between your fence.

I have CO's but my czech german shepherd terrifies most dogs and will kill any stray that does run off her turf quick enough, she can dispatch a dog fast, they breed them for strong grips and fight drive, but CO is also really good. My czech and mop the floor with my brothers akbash and 2 great pry's and send them into orbit they don't have her killing instinct and aggression but they were enough to deter coyotes.

First off, the dogs aren't starving to death, theyre just the kind of dogs that a lot of farmers keep where they feed them once a day and besides scrap thats it. I probably over exagerated the whole not being fed thing, my bad.

2nd- poison was a resort before i got better answers on here.

3rd- they're dogs. i'm not going to run to the police right away and give HUMAN neighbors problems with the law/animal control. They're animals..shooting them with a pellet gun or paintball gun isn't going to mortify the dogs like some overly mothered child or something. Dogs/animals deal with that sort of thing much different than people. I mean they bite and fight each other. If it means keeping my chickens from being KILLED, i think these dogs can take a few paintball shots, I myself go paintballing all the time and have been hit in the neck, butt, stomach, side of the head..many times where nothing was protecting my skin but a t shirt.

no offense but i was somewhat offended by this statement so i thought i would clear things up a bit. I'm all for animal rights but i think people take it too far these days. animals are animals. if the dog is too stupid to not murder another animal i am not going to feel bad for pelting it. if that doesnt teach it a lesson i'll shoot it. i'm not going to cause my neighbors, whom i have to continue living next to, problems with the law over a dog.

i don't think they are actually living that terribly. it was just that one week when the family was gone that the dogs killed my chickens, i think other than that they get fed well, i was over there today and both dogs looked pretty big and healthy. i guess the only person i can blame is myself, a lot of my posts were made in a full steam of anger and hatred toward these dogs.

i think something must have been going on, like a family situation or something because they were gone a lot for another two weeks after that but after i told them that my chickens had been eaten there was someone coming there all the time, probably to feed the dogs

if you got a dog then you would probably get a livestock guardian dog or something not another breed because you dont want the hastle of training it not to kill your chickens and then also the pain of all the extra work

yes dogs give each other harsh punishment lessons but we know better and are smarter and more civil than dogs since we are humans painball if it doesnt maim or seriously hurt the dog or mace could be an option

Maybe a donkey would be better a standard not a mini then you just dont have to worry about anything a donkey will be able to handle most dogs just get one that hates canines, it is cheaper to take care of.

He would still need a fence for a donkey and not all donkeys hate dogs enough to chase them off

I know cause i have had both donkeys and dogs together before and they did fine from the very beginning.
