I dont recommend mudpuddles. Chickens poop in it and then drink from it before drinking from a waterer....not good.

I think the one thing that actually helped my girls through the awful heat wave we had a few weeks back was mud puddles! I hosed down their pen and they hunkered down in the nice cool soil and when they came out to free range they stuck close to the multiple puddles I made for them.
