This is the first time I have allowed a broody Welsummer hen to incubate, hatch and raise chicks. My previous experience has been to raise the chicks by themselves under heat lamps. I notice this time that the chicks are extremely happy with the mother hen. When I raised chicks separated they were stressed, as their frequent peeping indicated. These chicks with the mother never peep, are peaceful and calm, and I don't have to worry about the temperature — mother takes care of that with her wings. They love to climb over her like a jungle gym. It seems the completely natural way to go. I will aways do it this way from now on.
