I use it as a preventive for external parasites mainly. Never really had any signs or symptoms of 'inside' problems ever show up. They only get it fed to them every so often, but they peck their wallow alot. Wild birds get through the fence to peck at stray feed, so I'm worried about 'imported' pests. There are so many things that can be 'shared' via blood-sucking pests, I'd rather err on the side of caution.

I usually google food grade DE and choose the site that has the cheapest shipping for 50#. Usually, the shipping is equal to the price of the DE. About $50 total.

We never use it.... guess we are weird.

LOL! Not at all! I have egg customers so I can't use sevin or any other toxins. Makes it difficult sometimes to keep the buggies down. This summer hasn't been bad though. Last year I had some lice. Nasty!!!

I've always stayed away from as many man-made and 'promoted' chemicals as I could. We've owned this place since '96 and the strongest things used on it is sevin in the garden for flea beetles and ear worms, and the ivermectin wormer through my horses. My grandkids wish I'd use a few more, especially when some of the super spiders get into the bathroom. We have run-of-the-mill brown yard spiders that can do pushups on coffee mugs. Makes for a horrible sensation when they come crawling over the back of the toilet tank to see what you are doing 'over there.'

I agree. DE is more of a preventative than a cure, if your birds have mite problems it probably wouldn't take care of them (mites) quick enough.

The trick on the mites is to make the hens feathers less 'welcoming' to being homesteaded. DE staying in their feathers doesn't make it a comfortable place to set up shop.

You are most welcome.!! I basically use it in the "dust bowls" and around the barn for fly control. I haven't had any problem with mites this year at all and the wild birds are certainly an issue in and around my barn.

For spiders in the bathroom - get some little glue traps (they make small ones for insects) and put them on the floors behind the toilets, also in the closets, and by your hot water heater, etc. You'd be amazed how many of the little critters you will get, and no poison in your house. We have the dreaded brown recluse around here and hate spiders.

Cripes! I had them last year! Fisher spiders. DH hit one with a shoe and the feet reached out past the sole of his shoe. Glue traps.. BRILLIANT! I stand on the edge of the tub and scream for help!
