Well, I just went out to check them again - I put the Jap into James old cage, since he isn't there anymore. No other chicken out there has any symptoms whatsoever - I just don't understand what this could be.

The Jap is still swollen on both sides, the side he was swollen on first is REALLY bad - has discharge out of that eye, the other side is only partially swollen, but I think it is a matter of time on that one to be totally swollen, too. I figured with him in a smaller cage he could get to the food and water easier.

Neither of them with the snot or swelling had any nasty odor - so I am thinking it isn't coryza. The jap even now, as bad as he is swollen has no odor at all. Just chicken odor, of course, and even that isn't bad.

I just want this stuff to be gone from my farm and not take any more of my babies.

If I do lose the Jap then I hope he is the last one to get this. If he is not any better by tomorrow (or if he is worse) I'm going to just cull him.

I still have a trio of japs, that I can give you guys hatching eggs off of in the spring. But Cindy wanted one of the jap boys - well, probably wouldn't want him now, with this stuff going on at the farm. I know if it were me, I would certainly change my mind about taking him.

The babies I hatch out are gonna stay inside the house until either they go to new homes, or I have the coops cleaned out and I know it's safe to put them in the lower coop. So any babies I hatch out will still be safe (I hope). I have enough transport cages I can put up with chickens in my sewing room for awhile if need be.

I have that one triple breeding cage I can split some of them into for awhile. Plus I have the large cage, and ACE hardware has two rabbit cages - 2'x2' that are cheap, if I need more.

I can always move one of my sons out of their bedroom and turn it into my brooder house.

If their dining room wasn't the guest bedroom, you can believe it'd already be set up as my brooder house

Well, I got work to do today, so I better go do it.

I burned James in the burn barrel after I did the deed - I was more afraid of it spreading to my free rangers if the dog dug up his body or something than I was worried about finding a diagnosis.

It is strange how this has played out, though. I had two very sick, and a couple with a snotty nose for a day (which still could have been just dust and stress) and no other birds are sick - even ones in the same coop with the sick ones.

I would think if it were coryza I'd have a lot more of them sick, or at least showing some partial signs of being sick.
Heck, the others all look healthier than ever out there. This morning I took them some leftover acorn squash from dinner last night, and they devoured the stuff - looked like a bunch of feathered pyrhanas (sp).

The Jap is the only one who had any swelling at all, too. James didn't look "sick", just had a really snotty nose/beak.

I don't want to sound depressing, but that's how my flock was. Some just got a snotty nose/beak and were ok, then others got really swollen and died. And they all got sick one at a time. One would go through it, then die or clear up, then shortly after another would get sick...it's been going on that way for almost three months!!

I sure hope that's not what this is. I feel just terrible. I am the one that got those chickens for Meri. And like she said, they looked just fine. Can they be carriers of coryza, without being sick? I really know nothing about chicken illnesses. I have been lucky so far, and haven't had any sick yet.

Whether they are the cause or not, Shelley, I wouldn't blame you at all. Heck, if I'd been there, I would have bought them, too. They are both fine
smile.png
no signs of being sick, but maybe they are carriers. Either way, like I said, no blame from me at all.

Well, I guess I can sell hatching eggs, as long as I don't sell chickens or chicks. I would hate to cull them, and clean everything up and restock - then find I still have it here.

Maybe I will just clear them out and start over - I just don't really know what to do about it. I'll probably just see if anymore get sick after this, and go from there.

Hubby needs the computer tonight to do research on some piece of equipment

so I guess I'm off here til tomorrow -

LOL... He said you are a good chicken chaser and you will be the first to call if he has to chase any..
smile.png
He did not go to Russell Springs last night , the man going with him , or taking him I should say , did not want to go with it raining and all so maybe next week..

Yes , we have a bator, getting ready to set another bunch tomorrow night sometime, and we have some due to hatch Thursday , had some hatch last week (12, with 9 of those still here..
smile.png
) I guess it will take a few weeks to get some fertile eggs ready , and by the time we get these in the bator and the next hatch ready , I will be ready to take some if you think they will be fertile by then. I am unsure really how long it takes to insure that the eggs are good, maybe someone on here knows and if they do, please let me know.. But sure , I will buy some eggs from you to stick in the bator.. I fell in love with that little man the other day when you were here , he is so dang cute .. Let me know what you find out... Take care..

Oh I feel so bad for you... I was stunned when I read that. Do you want me to bring that tylan over? I can bring it Monday after school. I would tomorrow but I have to take Cortni back to College. I have two extra cages if you need them for a while. They stack and have slide out trays. or you can just place them on the ground.

They can be carriers and not be sick. The ones that survive shed the virus and infect other birds.

(I've done way too much research while trying to figure out what was wrong with all my birds.)

I have my fingers crossed that no more of your birds get sick!!

Thanks, but actually, the tylan won't really do anything but cure the jap, and he'd be a carrier his entire life. He was really bad looking tonight, not sure if he'll still be alive tomorrow morning or not. No other sickies as of this evening. Even if he is cured you probably won't want him at your place, or the other one, in case they are all carriers now. Plus, if you don't want him, he'll be an extra roo. I won't be able to give him way to anyone because he'd be a carrier.

But it is up to you, if he lives til Monday and you still want one of the jap boys, then yeah, bring the tylan over and I'll give it to him. Otherwise I'll give you some hatching eggs when I get some from the survivors and you can hatch your own roo.

Maybe when ya bring the babies to brood, you can bring the cages. That way I can just keep them in the house and away from the sickness or carriers, or whatever is going on out there. They'll be fine in the playpen until they learn to fly
smile.png
then it'll get interesting in there. That'll be when I'll need a cage for them.

I've discovered through trial and error that the snake tank doesn't work for chickens
smile.png
they kick up so much dust it covers the glass and ya can't see inside, and they sort of get trapped in all that dust. Cages are better, at least they get more air flow.

I might just buy a couple of the rabbit cages, to use as brooders. I have the one big cage, as long as I am just doing a few, they'll fit in there temporarily.

Let me think about the cages, and I'll get back to ya. I ought to measure that triple cage and see what size it really is inside, cause that would work good, too, I could put that on the table in the sewing room (it's an old library table, so it is very long).

I think I'm gonna go to bed early tonight, I'm just tired out from thinking.

Talk to you all tomorrow.
