Hi!

I live in Bloomfield and have 9 Orpingtons Blues, Blacks, and Lavenders. I started my flock in June. They are just staring to lay now. I will be selling a few chicks now and then, because I can't keep them all. Thinking I will specialize in Orpingtons. BUT I am finding tat Chickens are addictive! Welcome!

I'm not new, but since there are so many new people to this section, I will introduce myself

I am Shelley, and I live about 10 miles east of Columbia in Adair Co. I have several different breeds and species of birds, I will try to list them here

--Black Copper Marans (2 roos, 3 hens)
--Barred Rocks (1 roo, 3 hens)
--Lakenvelders (Golden roo, silver roo, 2 golden hens)
--2 pair of silkies (1 white, 1 blue)
--Lavender and split lavender Ameraucana LF: 1 split roo, 1 lav pullet, 1 split pullet
--a group of bantam cochins currently consisting of a black mottled roo, a blue roo, 3 black mottled hens, 1 red frizzle hen, 1 black and 1 black frizzle cockerels, 1 black frizzle pullet, 3 black mottled cockerels, 1 black mottled pullet, 6 baby black mottleds and 1 baby black frizzle in the brooder, and 5 little baby black mottleds in the pen with their mamas.
--Old English Game bantams: 1 pair of blue, a trio of splash (with 6 babies), and an oddball group consisting of a black rooster, 2 blue hens, and a splash hen. I've also got a blue cockerel & pullet and a black pullet from my blue pair, then I've got 2 blue cockerels and a silver blue cockerel from a silver blue hen that I lost this summer

--Serama: Currently I have at least 8 cockerels and 1 adult rooster, at least 8 pullets and 3 adult hens, and a few babies. The super-broody (OEGB/d'uccles mix) has some Serama eggs in her nest so I should have some more soon

--Then I've got some Old English and American game LF just because I like them (no fighting here!)
--Of course there are several oddballs, either pure birds that I only have 1 of or mixed birds that have made their mark on my heart and will never leave

In addition to the chickens, I also have guineas, Embden geese (with 1 Chinese goose), Pekin and Rouen ducks (with 1 Runner duck), Ringneck Pheasants (with 1 male Red Golden), Ringneck Doves, and Birmingham Roller pigeons. Finally, I have coturnix and button quail.

So there you have it, me and my farm in a nutshell....or is that a nut-house?

Nice to have some close neighbors on here. I have heard that if you are going to have a rooster an Orpington is the way to go! Yes chickens are addictive, i'm already thinking about what I want to add to my flock next year. We went to the state fair this year and loved seeing what a variety of chickens there are!

Where is Metcalf county or what city/town is it near? I'm somewhat new to the area, still learning where things are. I see you have guineas at the bottom of your post/info. I am going to get some next spring to help take care of the ticks.

I am in Edmonton. I have 12 breeds of chickens, ducks, guineas, turkeys, geese and pygmy goats. I have birds available all year...something hatching every few days..lol!
Busy, busy, busy!!!

Hello all,

We we live in Oldham County and are new chicken owners, we currently only have laying hens but hope to get meat chickens this spring. We are trying to find breeders, mentors, and like minded folks in our area. We do plan to move within the state in the next couple months so if any of you know of farms for sale in your area for decent prices please let us know.
P.S. has anyone been to the new swap meet in shepherdsville?

Good to know! I will keep you in mind when I expand the flock in the spring. Do you hatch guineas too?

If the swap meet is across the street from the flea market in shepherdsville then yes I have been. We stopped by a few months ago after checking out the flea market and wasn't impressed. Just a few people selling adult chickens and guineas. I was looking for guinea keets at the time. I know these type swaps just depend on who shows up that week. May be great now, just haven't been back.
