Good luck, and let me know how it works for you. I put the tarps up in the lower coop just now - it helped so much!! I'm glad you gave me the idea.

Well, I candled again today (last time, really,
lau.gif
) I said I was doen candling, but I wanted to check one more time - and I found soem eggs I thought were no good to be looking like they are right up with the good ones!! As of right now the count is 32 positively good eggs (that I can tell) and the rest I am not sure of, but they don't stink, so they stay.

8 of the 32 are standard size cochins, the rest are mostly Shelley's eggs I got from her, and a few of my own eggs from my hens. I had almost 2 dozen of Shelleys, and I've tossed out two of them for blood rings. The third blood ring was a cochin egg.

I am a little more hopful today after candling this last time. Still nervous, but more hopeful.

Oh, and so far no other sick birds - I hope the illness is gone. I am even feeling hopeful that it was just some weird bug that got those two and that it won't totally affect the flock (as carriers) I guess I'll see when I let more chickens join (of the hatched ones I'll have) and see if they get sick or not. I'm still not bringing in any new strange chickens, unless I know the source for sure, though. Too much of a risk.

I know it is early to hope for it being gone, but hey, I need a break.

So, one Q - once I stop turning, how high should the humidity be again?

meri

Make it as humid as you can...Preferably 60 or up. I have to add sponges to get mine to go up that high. I have 3 in there right now...You can also use a clean washcloth or sock. I used a sock on my first hatch when I got the 2 Ameraucanas to hatch.

I have the little container that I have the temp guage on, I figured to move the temp guage to the floor of the bator (along with the eggs) and use that to hold water with a sponge or something.

Ok, at least 60 _ can do that - I've had it up to 57 once, without trying (had just added a cup of water ot it, put in a bit too much

) I opened a vent and it went down pretty soon, though.

Oh, and I have to open the vent plugs, too, right?

I am such a noob.

If the sponges don't work, you can put a piece of rolled up paper towel in there with the end of it in the water, like a wick. I had to do that with mine before I added the fan to it. It was about the only way to get it to go up, and I had sponges in mine too!
That is great that the eggs you got from me are doing so well! So all of them were fertile?
And yes you do need to open the vents. That's what makes it so hard to keep the humidity up in these things!!

I don't think that any of them I got from you are clear - but then, your dad has enough roosters in there to do the job

I hope they hatch ok. I would be really bummed if they got to pip stage and died.

Did you set them in the evening or the morning? If they were set in the morning then that day would have been day 1, and if they were set in the evening (like after noon), then the next day would have been day 1.

I stayed up all night and I set them at 1:30 AM Sunday Morning - I was rather excited....

So, I put the eggs on their sides out of the egg cartons, to hatch, and I added a bowl of water and some sponges - and I'm standing there, waiting for the temp and humidity to rise again - and hubby walks in behind me.... Looks at the bator, looks at me, looks at the bator, looks at me... I say "I'm waiting for the temp and humidity to raise again"... he says "oh, I thought you were waiting for them to hatch" - then he laughs and walks out.

How am I gonna survive the next three or four days?

Well if there anything like my banties, you won't need to wait that long! Mine always hatch 2-3 days early, no matter what! Even the standard chick that my bantie brooded hatched the same time as the others!

I hope !! Well, sort of

I hope they hatch healthy, early isn't important, as long as I get healthy babies.

The "good eggs" look full (have a reasonable sized air sack) but they are heavy, so I am thinking they must be close to ready to hatch. No peeping or pipping, or movement of the eggs, yet, though, so I got a few days...

I hope I can get to sleep tonight,
