Kentucky people

There are lots of posts and I will try to go through them later.. But I wanted to take a minute and say "hello!" We live in Radcliff, KY and are new to chickens. We tried twice last year but our chickens would mysteriously get sick and die. One minute they were fine and healthy, the next minute they were dead. I waited a year, got a whole new coop on the other side of our yard, and am trying again one more time.

We are going to have 4-5 hens. I wish we could have a Roo.. maybe one day when we have our dream house in the country. We just got two French Black Copper Marans today. They are 2 months old and seem to be a good size and healthy. I've noticed that these chickens seem to enjoy foraging and eating greens and stuff. Our others would only eat chicken feed. Our dog did bark at them and scare them though.. Hopefully, they will get used to one another, but the coop and run area seem to be very secure. I double checked it again today!

I believe that the guy who owns them says they are pure blooded and he was getting rid of them because they weren't show quality. I don't care so much about showing them. They are pets and a source of eggs for our family. :) Their names are Chocolate and Chocolate Chip. I didn't choose them, two of my girls did. They each claimed on as "their" personal chicken.

Tomorrow, we are going to pick up some Frizzle chickens. I am supposed to go to the woman's house tomorrow evening. I think Frizzles are SO CUTE! She says she has a few different frizzle breeds, so I'm not sure what I will come home with.

Welcome!! We live in Hardin county and should be getting our chickens this weekend. This website is a great place to ask questions and seek experienced chicken folks! Did the person you get the Black Copper Marans from have any more? I love the look of their eggs! Good luck and hope your kids enjoy their new friends!

Blessings

Tonya- We got the last two he had for sale BUT he had several young chicks that he might not keep. I believe he breeds them for show and sells the ones that aren't up to specs or something. I don't care about show quality myself.. :) I found him on Craigslist. Actually, that is how I found all of our chickens. It is hit or miss though. I contacted one person and they said they would let me know what time to meet them and I never heard back again. Another person gave me an address but all I found was a mailbox and a closed gate with about 10 horses standing right behind it. I grew up with the knowledge that you didn't just go through a closed gate.. that's just asking to get yourself on the wrong end of shotgun! Not only that.. the horses were RIGHT THERE and I would have been worried that one might have gotten out or something! Yeah... I messaged them twice and after waiting 45 minutes I gave up and went home..

Anyhoo.. all that to say that we do NOT have any frizzles! We did pick up 4 more chickens today, so we now have SIX of them.. I don't have pictures yet but our chickens are:

Chocolate: A French Black Copper Maran. My oldest daughter named her.
Chocolate Chip: Also a French Black Copper Maran. My middle daughter named her.
Snowball: A White Plymouth Rock. My youngest daughter named her.
Taco: A Rhode Island Red. My son named her. He's 2 and REALLY loves tacos.
Eglantine: An Easter Egger. I named her. From the character on Bedknobs and Broomsticks but also because she is an Easter Egger.
Castroneves: A Barred Plymouth Rock. My husband named her. He initially wanted to name her Original Recipe but we said no way!

The Marans are friendly and used to being held. The new ones.. not so much. We are hoping they will get used to us eventually.
