Splat wasn't top roo in the bachelor pen, so he is probably used to keeping his head low.

Awww poor red - he can't win for trying, can he? I've found that the bantam cochin roos think they are just as big as the BIG roos, and fight accordingly
lau.gif
and usually end up the worse side of it.
It's like Chuck Norris beating up on a muppet. The muppet may put up a good front, but he won't win

The hens I got from Shelley were all perching in the nest boxes tonight when I went out to turn off lights. Speckles wanted them up on the perch with him, but they were just enjoying the new hay. I think they are happy to only have ONE roo to deal with
lau.gif
, poor girls were out-numbered at Shelley's house, I think.

Shelley, why doesn't your dad butcher some of those extra roos? He probably doesn't need that many. Heck, he likes fresh chicken, too. I'm surprised he hasn't grabbed one or two for Sunday dinner.

The buttons are moving out a bit more - after the trauma of moving to my house, they slept all day in a pile behind the skull in the tank (yeah, I have a big screaming skull in there for them to hide behind
lau.gif
I'll take pics tomorrow). They came out tonight to get drinks, but haven't tried the food yet - I imagine tomorrow morning they'll be hungry enough to try it.

Well, I dozed off in a chair again earlier, so I think I ought to just go to bed. I wish hubby wouldn't let me do that

Oh my!! Why are chickens so dramatic??

My roo Charlie has finally found his you-know-whats. One of 'the bullies', as Cristian calls them, decided to pick a fight with Charlie right after Meri got here this morning. Let's just say he probably won't be doing that again!
lau.gif
I am thinking I'm gonna have to make a pen for Charlie before long. He is starting to show his stuff, and he doesn't back down too easily. I also found out that he is a red jungle fowl roo, and they are supposedly more aggressive than games, though I'm not sure. I need to find some jungle fowl hens for him. I don't want or need a bunch of mixed breed chickens around, so I really don't want to put him with the game hens. I have also found out that my hen is an OEG, and dad's hens are american games
he.gif
So that's 2 more different breeds that I don't need. I don't want to have more than 1 game roo (which means almost all of Gretta's chicks that came with her need to go, out of 6 there is one pullet). I might just use Gretta as a broody or layer. Her eggs so far have all been kind of messed up. Out of 25+ eggs I have found of hers I have 2 chicks. Most of them died during development, with 2 or 3 dying after hatching. I have been told the problems with her eggs sounds like a genetic problem. So she is probably no good for breeding, but she is a decent mama. Idk, maybe I'll just take her back to the sale and see what I can get for her. I so want to go to the one in Liberty this spring, so anyone that hears about it please let me know!

I just noticed I went over 1000 posts - (about 34 posts ago

I am now Chicken Obsessed - boy is THAT accurate !!
gig.gif

But, the funny thing is - I am making Hubby chicken obsessed, too - the guy checks on those chicks almost as often as I do (and he doesn't want too many chickens in the house
lau.gif
yeah, right he doesn't

)

gonna go to bed, really I am.....

Meri---Your guess is as good as mine for why he doesn't butcher some roos. He needs to do in a lot of his chickens period. I don't know why he has so many in the first place! And he will most likely get some more chicks in the spring when Day&Day has their 'chick days'. They give, I think, 5 chicks for every bag of feed you buy, or something like that. I probably won't get any, but I'm sure he'll take them. I believe it is just for buying chick start, which is what all my chickens still eat. Well, that and flock raiser. When I get a coop built where I can seperate the old from the new I will start getting the layer. They aren't laying AT ALL now anyway, so they don't need it.

I have 3 duck eggs developing!!
woot.gif
I candled tonight on day 6 and there are 3 of 5 duck eggs developing. One looks clear and one has a very obvious blood ring in it. The 4 goose eggs I wasn't able to see any veining, but they look like a couple 'might' be developing. The shells are a lot thicker on the goose eggs, I have heard, so that would make it harder to see. They still have over 3 weeks left to incubate, so it is pretty early yet.

Cindy---What kind of calls do you have? I remember you said you would let me have/buy some eggs from you, I was just wondering what I might be getting??

Ok, I'm done for now

I was thinking I might grab some white rocks at Chick Days - I'll need chickstarter anyway, and in the spring they have the higher protein one there, I think.

I'll just ask her next time I'm in there what she plans to order for spring.

meri (who STILL needs to go to bed)

Oh, btw - update on my orp eggs - I have two I am not sure if they quit or not, but the rest of them (11 eggs) are all still going strong.

dang bator spiked to 103 for a short while today before I noticed. I check it pretty often, though, cause I know our house tends to go up and down more with the woodstove going than with the furnace. I doubt it had been that high for very long.

can't wait for buff orpington chickies !!!!

I have some beautiful Khakis, blues, and silvers...Am supposed to be going over to buy a pair of Chocolates as well but am thinking of just buying an extra pair of each of the ones I now have. At 30.00 a pair I have to be choosy so am still thinking it over.

I've been thinking on the "me want ducks" issue.

Now, depending on how the meat chicken thing goes, I still want something I can raise for a HUGE bird for holidays and the like. Talking to Shelley's dad today, I think I may want to try a goose or two to raise for larger meat birds (instead of ducks).

Seriously, Turkeys just creep me out
lau.gif
, they are scary - and geese can be scary, but they don't LOOK as scary as a turkey does. Plus, it'll be funny to see those guineas try to buffalo a goose - I doubt they'd get the upper hand.

So, maybe I'll research some geese to see what would be a good eating breed.
