Go ahead, they have a lot of birds, not sure about fancy stuff, I didn't look for those. You may as well add them onto my order, save you from having to do a minimum of 15 birds.

Might be on this page --- http://www.cacklehatchery.com/bantam.html

oops
, you want bantams try the new link

It seems like everyone has a favorite hatchery

The feed store by me and Shelley orders from Mt. Healthy, and their chicks are pretty nice - the Brahamas don't have good leg feathering, though. All of the ones I got were healthy and grew pretty well - two of my black australorps were pretty small for australorps, though.

I've heard good things about Cackle, quality etc... so I'm ordering from them because of that and because I can order as few as 15 birds (but my order keeps getting bigger

) and their shipping (so far the order is up to 20) starts at only 15 dollars, no box charge or hidden charges and such.

other than that, I haven't any input on the other hatcheries.

eta - cackle's prices per chick are very reasonable, too.
eta again - Cackle is close by, too - in mid south Missourri - less distance to ship the chicks.

I think there have been some discussions on which hatchery is better or not. Try doing a search for Ideal Hatchery, and you'll probably come up with some posts.

My problem with ordering from a hatchery is I work first shift 29 miles from my post office. So picking them up is the problem. I would love to get a small group raise them up to a sexable age then pick out those I want to keep. I also cant make up my mind. Wyandottes, brown leghorns, hamburgs, langshans....

Is there a P.O. near your work? From my understanding, they usually call very early in the morning to let you know they are there. You could maybe have them shipped closer to where you work, then pick them up on your way. Just be sure to keep some chick start and a waterer in your car, so they can hang out in the lunch room till you're done! Or you could go in on an order with someone, then pick them up after work from the other person.

I ordered the Mixed Standard Layer pullets from Ideal. All the chicks arrived alive and healthy, I was very satisfied with their customer service that they provided. When I called them to ask questions they answered them very professionally and quickly. I would recommend them to anybody. Ordered 25 of the chicks and split the order with two other people.

Standards, layers, something differant.

Chiknmama, how well do cochins lay? how well do they do free ranging?

Hi Matt,
Anconas are good layers and very pretty black/white birds...They are good layers of white med/lg eggs. Australorps hold the record on the most eggs laid in a year which was 364 eggs in 365 days...They are great layers of lg brown eggs. For something different you could think about Faverolles...They lay a med/lg tinted egg and will lay year round, but are slow developers as in 6-8 months old before starting to lay. Barred Rocks are awsome layers and sweet birds all around...Great temperament.

Speaking of BRs Meri: BC has attached herself to me and is under foot all the time unless I'm holding her. She knows her name and comes when I call to her, even at night when I go out to lock up, she'll talk to me on her way over to me like she's saying,"where you been all day I've been waiting for you?" She is sooo sweet.

BTW Hi all!!! And welcome to any noobies that may have joined while I was in and out....

I know a guy in Eubank that had some of these quail I think, but lost them to a predator that tore the bottom off their cage...I can find out if he has bought anymore...Just have to find his screen name on here again.

Meri,
I liked Ideals quality in some of their chicks...Here are 3 of the Cochin bantams I got from them...Ended up pretty nice and good personality...Would like to add some more to your order if you don't mind, if you end up ordering from Ideal.

Ms. Lewis Rich - Sad news, the black leghorn I gave to Leighton(Layne's friend) for Christmas was stolen Christmas eve out of his coop along with the rest of his flock. Second time this year this has happened and both times the guard dog next to them broke his lead. This is a german Shepherd he never pays much attention to the chickens when they hang out around him and he never bothers with getting worked up over other dogs so we know this was a 2 legged predator as he is a trained guard dog for the business next to Leighton. Seems like these folks wait til he gets his chickens to adults to make their move or something. Already have Shelley keeping her eyes open at the Sano auction when they go. Anyone here in Pulaski or surrounding I would appreciate if you keep on the lookout for the following maybe showing up at auctions or flea markets:
one show quality black bantam Legorn hen, very pretty...
one Cochin bantam Partridge
I believe he had one or two Partridge Silkies, pet quality
Mille Fleur hen
Black or dark blue frizzle Cochin bantam
This is some of them, I'll have to talk to him again to get the rest of the list, he is supposed to be writing down what he lost so I can post it.
Will post official list when he gives it to me in the BST forums for Ky folks...Maybe someone will find them. Don't think they were stolen for food as they are all bantams, not much meat there.
