Yeah, when I let them loose in the pen, he immediately jumped into the water dish to take a bath

By the time I went back out to shut them in their house, the top of it had started to freeze over.

I've been considering where I want hubby to put up a duck/goose pen for me

I'm thinking somewhere out back in the pasture, so it can be out of the way, but they'll be free ranging once it gets warmer and they get used to the place, so it doesn't need to be anything except for at night or if it's storming badly out.

I'll just have to study on it awhile

Whoot! We have us another mouser of a different sort! Lets just say we have some odd pets. I went in the garage to get the dogfood and went back in the house and started pouring it into the bowl and out jumps a little mouse(man these mice are small this year). Well Amy (our Sheltie) does a double take cause I guess she wasn't sure of what she saw. Then goes over to where the little mouse ran and scared it from that spot then caught it on the way to its next hiding spot and snapped its neck. What a good girl, and I always thought she could care less about mice. Needless to say she got a lot of praise and a nice little treat, and no it wasn't the mouse although she did want to eat it. Even tried to defy me when I told her to drop it, but reluctantly she did.

Just have hubby make a small mobile version of the main pen, or one of those little A frame ones with the little coop at the end...It doesn't have to be more than a couple feet tall maybe a little taller if A frame, and they can freerange without being hawk bait. Oh wait, you have dogs so you probably don't have to worry about that.

I hope the dogs recognize the ducks as "more chickens" and don't think they are a new toy to play with

That poor girlie was freaking out in the cage with Lily and Toby both looming over her and looking at her with wagging tails. I chased the dogs away, and they went, but she was not used to seeing dogs, I guess

and was not happy about it at all.

Here's a Q - do they need water at night in the duckhouse, or would they be ok til morning - I was wondering because I figured it'll be dark in there, and they'll spill it and it might freeze onto them.
I can't wait til summer when it warms up enough not to worry about stuff like that.

Cool, I figured in summer or when it warms up I won't have to lock them into the duck house at night, they can just be in the pen and have ability to go in or out.

I'd just hate for them to get water on them in this cold and be stuck sitting in the house all night with wet feet.

I usually can leave them out until late at night, then let them out early in the morning. I don't turn off coop lights until about 9 PM usually. They are all inside, right now, though, cause it is so cold, but this is only supposed to last a couple of days. (I hope) .

Come summer, it'll be even later than 9 PM, and I'd like to try to get them to just hang around and sleep either in the barn or in their house in the barn.

That drake sure did like having that big run all to themselves, though
lau.gif
he settled right in and laid down on the sand in there (she laid down next to him finally) and just sat there looking around like he owned the place

Layne, the snakeskin, I believe, was the last one before my snake died this last summer. I tried to choose one that was all in one piece for ya.

I would have tossed in some snake vertebra but I couldn't find where I stashed them
lau.gif
I had a heck of a time finding the chicken feet I had stashed in the closet.

If I come across the snake vertebra I'll put a couple in a baggie for ya to use for jewelry or to add to your NA Bags.

wen we saw one of our ducks dead we wanted to check on the other ones we couldent find the blue drake so we checked under the housee and it was sitting there alone scared to death

poor thing but it survived

Granted mine aren't calls, but they are almost always on the pond. I don't think they would mind having wet feet, but no they don't need it at night.

I have two new layers now. One is one of Cris's silkies, found an egg in their tractor this morning. That thing was about as big as a quail egg!!

I don't know who is the other layer, but I found a bantam sized whitish egg on top of the rabbit cage. It was pretty bloody so I know it's new. Might be Emma, though I don't remember her laying white eggs. I'll have to see if I can catch the culprit.

I was going to take a pic of Cris with 'his' silkie egg. It had a crack, since it had gotten frozen, so it was on top of the stove in a bowl with other cracked eggs. Of course dad decided he wanted to eat some eggs today, so in the skillet it went

So poor Cris didn't even get to see it, and I didn't get my pic
