Since ya'll are in Ky with me and we're sharing this cold weather I thought I'd ask...

I have 1o week olds out in the coop. There are 7, a mix of Salmon Favs and Buff Brahmas. My computer forecaster is showing a temp of -2 this morning and they were all out, scratching around and being chickens this morning. I think I've checked on them 98708086.2 times.

I couldn't decide if I should bring them in last night, knowing that we are only having 2 days of this horrible cold deterred me from bringing them in to poop up the crate, dust up the downstairs and make them unhappy in their squashed space.

So, what so you ya'll do?
I'm still questioning whether or not I will bring them in tonight (forecast is even lower today than yesterday.

I have to add that I don't have an option for a heat lamp to the coop.

All the wild animals are out in this weather. My roos are in the coop and I think I will take them some warm oatmeal. They have a 60 watt lightbulb touching the metal water can. Hopefully it didn't freeze. In the past the lightbulb kept the coop about 10 degrees warmer than outside but I don't know about it being this cold.

I also added a new page to my BYC page showing Star killing and eating that snake last summer.

I've been changing their water every few hours as the little ball on the rabbit waterer keeps getting frozen in place. My husband actually used one of my good dish towels last night to wrap around the waterer and hopefully keep the water from freezing overnight. It worked, but the metal ball was still stuck this morning.

Welcome CW (and anyone else I may have missed before).

Well, I got to say - those little ducks are tough!!! I'm impressed.

I fully expected to go out this morning and find two little duckcicles stuck to the floor of the duck house, but they were just laying in there, quietly chatting to each other when I opened the door up for them.

They calmly walked out and laid down in some sunshine and began to nibble on some food and preen their feathers. I got them some unfrozen water and they went and took a drink, but I noticed they didn't jump right in - I guess they aren't dumb ducks

I at least expected to be met with loud quacking when I got out there to open their door up - nope, nothing, they act like this is all routine and they've been here their entire lives

I can't wait til I can let them out a bit to freerange some. I figure I'd better wait til it's nice enough that I want to be out there to supervise for awhile on them.

I let George and his girls out too - it isn't as cold "feeling" as it was yesterday and they were losing their minds wanting out of the coop.

Mr. Speckles and his girls are dying to get out too, so I may try to arrange for them to come out into the run this afternoon a bit. I'll have to go out and take the ducks out for awhile, if they do.

I really need to get me some more Call ducks, these guys are so cute!!

Ms. Lewis Rich :

Meri . what color are they?
Can we have pictures when it warms up?

Yeah, I need to get some pics, but there is a pic of them on here, I got the two that Cindy had - the silvers that aren't really silvers

I think someone said they were blue splash of some sort.

They are adorable, that's all I know!! I don't really care what color they are

let me find the link to the pic....

here it is... https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=118478 they are the two on the left.

The drake was a bit bullied by the other two drakes (after this pic), so he is a little ratty right now, but he should be back into fine shape soon, I think.

The only other call duck I had seen besides Cindy's was last summer there was one hen at the auction at Sano - all by herself in a cage and you could hear this poor girlie all over the Sano grounds !!

I figured I did not want that type of duck, then I saw Cindy's ducks -- oh my gawd, they are so cute!!!

The little girl here was loud for a bit yesterday, when she first got here, but I haven't heard a peep out of her since. I guess they like it here

Star must've thought she found a huge worm... That was literally her meal for the day. Didn't know they'd eat them that big!

ya know, I just went outside and tried to herd the ducks out of the coop run for a bit, so the big chickens could come outside - they went to their house, then went to the doorway (open door) and turned around and went back to their house

I think they like it inside the fence better than out. I didn't chase them too much - I figured they're still new, don't want to make them scared of me.

If it were summer with nice green grass, they'd probably be more inclined to get out of the run. I'll have to grab some greens for them all at the store today when I take Jon to work - they will probably love me forever, my poor chickens haven't had much in the way of fresh greens for awhile. I had some leftover (going bad) lettuce the other day and it lasted maybe 5 seconds - I didn't have much of it though.

Mooney (big black australorp) was over by the run fence making the acquaintance of the little girl duck - they had a nice chat, then Mooney moved on her way.

she's never seen a duck, I wonder if she knows what it is.
