Oh, ya want to hear something funny ?

That silly girl duck.... I took some old tomatoes out to the chickens and ducks today (cleaned my fridge) and I took one to the ducks, first, so they'd have a chance to have some. I split it in half and tossed it on the ground by them. Then I took a couple in to Mr. Speckles and crew.

George and his girls were out back, and that girl duck didn't want the tomato, but she wanted the chickens to get it, so she ran quacking out back to get them, and they all came running, and she came flying back with them, so they could get some tomatoes

Oh, and only 4 of the quail are sold, the others are still here. There are 11 of them, would have been 12, but one decided to go swimming in the ducks waterer.

The ducks didn't like that, so they killed it

is that 11 plus the four that sold, or minus the four that sold?

That's 11 after he gets his, not counting the two pharoahs in the barn

I've been wanting some to raise/breed for meat (although hubby just informed me to go ahead, but he won't eat them

silly man).
He and his brother and dad used to hunt quail - but they never ate them, so he has no idea what they taste like - I don't either, but I'm willing to try them!!! Sometimes I just do not understand that man's eating habits. (btw, they didn't go to waste, they gave them to their neighbors).

This is the same man who says how good my chinese food smells (when I have chinese food at home) but he won't touch the stuff. I wonder how I can trick him into eating some quail meat....

If I get the kids to try it and they like it, I might talk him into it.

eta - I may buy more from ya further down the line, if I can talk the guys into eating them, too. I'll just start with the 6 for now, though.

OMG!! You should take him to the doctor, quick!!! Doesn't like chinese food??? There must be something wrong with that poor man!

Just make nothing but quail for dinner, and tell him they are cornish hens, he probably wouldn't even know! Oh and these quail should start laying in 2-4 weeks, so you can get your hatching fix on! Provided you keep at least 12 hours of light on them!!

I got 2 more button eggs today!! So that means I have at least 3 girls!

Want to ask ya'll a question....
When I get my chicks and they get older and are outside, if I let them out of their chicken coop to free range sometimes will they go and hand out with my neighbors chickens? They have a lot of chickens and roosters running around their yard and sometimes (they havent in awhile) a couple come in our yard and peck around where my bird feeders are. (I like to watch them) I dont want our chickens to hang out and get them mixed up or something.
Or will they know to come back home to their own coop?

They'll probably intermingle, especially if the neighbors have a rooster

he'll personally come over and invite them to join the flock over there. I don't know if they would come back each day or not.

I suppose you could band your chickens' legs with plastic bands so you could tell them apart when it came time to reclaim them.

Coolness on the girlies and I KNOW he won't eat Chinese food - well, his mama wouldn't eat it, so he won't.

Sometimes I wonder just what that family DID eat before I joined it. I know they have to have all their meat (no matter what it is) burned beyond recognition before they'll eat it - I'm slowly working ont hat one, I have him down to a "well done" instead of charred.

Jen4~~ They would know where home is, if you keep them locked up in there for a while. Plus my chickens all seem to hang out in their own little groups, hardly ever mixing with the others. You can almost look in my yard and tell which chickens hatched together and which didn't. You would probably want to 'herd' them back into their coop the first few days after you let them out, just to be sure they know where to go. Or you could feed them when it is almost dark inside the coop, then just lock them up. That is the easier way to do it.

Mine don't usually wander too far from their coop when they do get to freerange...Used to let them out everyday til they were attacked by a couple of dogs...Now they only get to go out if I'm back there any length of time. At least til I get them a yard fenced if it ever warms up enough to dig the postholes. I should say with the exception of Anna my Ancona, she goes where she wants to...Just glad the rest of the flock doesn't decide to follow suit.

Hey Meri, my Australorp/Wellie chick that hatched has the most beautiful chocolate brown color on its wings now...Is yours getting any brown yet? I hope she feathers totally that color.

That's how I am with steaks and stuff, and everything else has to be cooked very well!! Steaks are 'well done' but that means no red whatsoever!! If I go to a restaurant and get one and the inside is just a little pink I'll send it back!!
