Ok, good night at Sano. Took 7 birds, came home with 2 birds, not bad, also got two cages (and still brought home more money than I took with me). and brought home my quail babies from Shelley. (I sold Flip just as I was packing up - so I only brought home Chickaboom and Loretta.)
Got to meet a couple of other BYC KY folks
and the weather held out nice.
So, I get home and my neighbor had called me, so I call him back - turns out he came over to my house earlier for eggs (when I wasn't home yet) and as he was pulling around our property this HUGE bobcat comes running across our hayfield and crosses the road in front of him and stops out in the field across the road, gave him enough time to grab his field glasses to get a good look at this sucker - he said it was the biggest bobcat he's ever seen.
Well, everyone was fine, but he said to watch it for awhile, because they will scope out a place, then come back. The dogs had been out, and I've got all those donkeys (which will kill a bobcat), so I don't think it came close to the house, but that is too close for comfort.
It was full dark when we got home, and the ducks had gone into the coop with the chickens so I just shut the door on them and left them there for the night. They are safer in there than in the chicken run (which a determined bobcat could tear into if it wanted to). I ran Mr. Speckles and crew inside and shut them in, too. If the ducks and chickens do ok, I may just let them stay in the coop at night, as long as they aren't being harmed (Bossy has the chickens all trained to move out of her way already
) they can sleep in there til I get more ducks for them to hang with.
Well, that was my excitement for the day.
The quail are all settled into the sewing room in a big cage (they love the big cage). I need to run to Campbellesville this weekend to get some high protein game bird food for them - right now they are eating regular chick starter, which I'm sure isn't high enough protein. I ran out of game bird starter, though, so they'll have to make due for a day or two.
I am down to 6 quail, 4 button quail, and 3 chicks in the house - everyone else is outside (until and if the eggs I have in the bator hatch out end of the month
then I'll have a whole new batch of chicks to have in here - then when my dellie girls come, I'll 15 more chicks in here....)
Shelley - what sort of bedding should the quail have? I just threw in a couple of puppy pads for them tonight, it was dark, and I didn't feel like digging around in the barn for other bedding.
well, gonna go sit down a while and watch TV.
night all -
