Kentucky people

Oh yay!!! this will be a fun evening!

Shelley I forgot to tell Layne that you'll have Cris there with you. I think he kinda feels like a big brother or role model to him, by the way he talks about him. I think it's cute because you can see Layne trying to be real mature and watch over the little ones when there are some around....Too bad I am over 40, he's asked for a little brother or sister and I said Sorry, I'm too old to start again. Guess the chickens are going to have to be surrogates for him.

ETA: Guess I better go check for eggs....See ya'll this afternoon.

ok, for those who don't know me and my truck - I drive a red Ford F150 it has a wide chrome strip down the side - I'll be sitting by the tailgate with cages of chickens/roosters and wearing a denim vest with a grey sweatshirt type jacket under it.
Oh, and I always have some type of head covering - it'll be my black t-shirt material full-head scrunchie today. (unless it is very windy, in which case I'll have on my red stocking cap.)

Feel free to come on over and intro yourself

(and maybe take home a stoopid spitzhauben rooster with ya

Ok, if ya google map this address, it'll map you to it.

331 W SULPHUR CREEK RD. COLUMBIA, KY 42728

Sano is a goat and sheep auction house, but they do poultry - all kinds - and the poultry auctions before the goats, but people come early and sell in the parking lot, before the auction.

eta = don't feel badly, we've been here only since Aug. of 07, and I still have to googlemap most places to find them.

Ok, good night at Sano. Took 7 birds, came home with 2 birds, not bad, also got two cages (and still brought home more money than I took with me). and brought home my quail babies from Shelley. (I sold Flip just as I was packing up - so I only brought home Chickaboom and Loretta.)

Got to meet a couple of other BYC KY folks
big_smile.png
and the weather held out nice.

So, I get home and my neighbor had called me, so I call him back - turns out he came over to my house earlier for eggs (when I wasn't home yet) and as he was pulling around our property this HUGE bobcat comes running across our hayfield and crosses the road in front of him and stops out in the field across the road, gave him enough time to grab his field glasses to get a good look at this sucker - he said it was the biggest bobcat he's ever seen.

Well, everyone was fine, but he said to watch it for awhile, because they will scope out a place, then come back. The dogs had been out, and I've got all those donkeys (which will kill a bobcat), so I don't think it came close to the house, but that is too close for comfort.

It was full dark when we got home, and the ducks had gone into the coop with the chickens so I just shut the door on them and left them there for the night. They are safer in there than in the chicken run (which a determined bobcat could tear into if it wanted to). I ran Mr. Speckles and crew inside and shut them in, too. If the ducks and chickens do ok, I may just let them stay in the coop at night, as long as they aren't being harmed (Bossy has the chickens all trained to move out of her way already
lau.gif
) they can sleep in there til I get more ducks for them to hang with.

Well, that was my excitement for the day.

The quail are all settled into the sewing room in a big cage (they love the big cage). I need to run to Campbellesville this weekend to get some high protein game bird food for them - right now they are eating regular chick starter, which I'm sure isn't high enough protein. I ran out of game bird starter, though, so they'll have to make due for a day or two.

I am down to 6 quail, 4 button quail, and 3 chicks in the house - everyone else is outside (until and if the eggs I have in the bator hatch out end of the month
lau.gif
then I'll have a whole new batch of chicks to have in here - then when my dellie girls come, I'll 15 more chicks in here....)

Shelley - what sort of bedding should the quail have? I just threw in a couple of puppy pads for them tonight, it was dark, and I didn't feel like digging around in the barn for other bedding.

well, gonna go sit down a while and watch TV.

night all -

The quail can be on wood shavings or just plain wire. Plain wire is easier to clean than anything else, that's the way most people do it.

You should have stayed for the sale Meri!!! There was a woman that brought 12 rouen ducklings there!! She was asking $3 each for them, which is what I paid for the 3 I got from her. The others sold for $2 in the auction...

Okay, I know we aren't supposed to discuss fighting chickens on here, but I just need to vent.

There was a group of teenagers standing in one of those horse stalls outside the building. I came around (searching for one of my cages...much easier to walk around the building than trying to go through it) and saw one of the roos laying on the ground about half dead already. Needless to say, I went off on those idiots!! I don't think I have EVER been so mad in my whole life!!! Bad enough that they were doing it, but to do it right there in public like it was no big deal?? The nerve of some people!! I told them that fighting roosters was illegal, and they needed to stop NOW. They thought they were smart, and told me it was only illegal if you were betting on them. Well, if I had had a cell phone, we would have found out who was right
wink.png
... I reported them to the owners. Evidently someone else had already, cause the guy said 'oh they were fighting them?' I guess whoever else reported them wasn't sure if they were fighting. I swear, I was soooooo mad I was almost in tears. I'm kinda weird like that, cry when I have too strong of an emotion of any kind. Makes it hard to argue with someone, but hey, that's how I am.

And then on top of that, some other idiot just dumped a female beagle there. I guess the guy had been trying to sell her, and when no one would take her he just left her there. I was lucky enough to find a home for her, other than mine
big_smile.png
I swear, what is with people nowadays??

I think I know the guys you mean on the fighting - I think that's what they were doing in the parking lot - when I thought that they had gotten loose from them.

Well, shoot, woman, why didn't ya buy me the other three? I'd have come out tomorrow to pay ya for em and pick them up.

I hadn't done chores yet, though, (donkeys were wondering where the heck we got off to without feeding them
lau.gif
) and I had the chickens and ducks out still (happily not eaten by the roaming bobcat I mentioned earlier.) Do Rouens look like Mallards? I'll have to look them up. I'd really rather have Muscovies and Blue Swedes, but I'd have taken them for that price, anyway, and grew them out a little and re-sold them.

Oh well, maybe next time someone will have some scoveys for me

meri - who has to go call her sister, now.

Yeah, the rouens are the 'brown' ones I have on my pond. They look exactly like mallards, only bigger. I thought of that just a little bit ago 'Oh yeah, Meri said she doesn't like mallard-looking ducks'.

I still can't get over those guys!! The nerve of some people!!

Oh, and guess what? I was selling my red pyle boys for $3 each (except for the one dad sold for $2
somad.gif
) There were 2 left that I sent through the auction. $9 for both of them!!
barnie.gif
I would have made more off them if I would have just sent them through to begin with!
