Kentucky people

Hey - I know some folks are looking for more local chicks and eggs and such - has anyone checked out Lake Cumberland Gamebird Farm and Hatchery (they have chicks, duck and geese, and turkeys too - aside from the quail and pheasant and other gamebirds).

I'd love to be able to pick them up (and save shipping) but I don't know how these folks work, I haven't ever talked to them or dealt with the hatchery. I wonder if you're doing a pick up if you still have to order the minimum.

They're over in Monticello - so not far from us down in South Central KY.

anyone ever dealt with this hatchery before? http://www.lakecumberlandgamebirds.com/

No I haven't dealt with them either, but I also wondered if you still had to order the minimum for pick-up. I would like (rather, Cristian would like) to get some pheasants, but I wouldn't want a whole ton of them. You don't have to have a permit to keep them, so I might get those as my 'game' birds. I love this state!! There are so many things we don't need permits for!

Well, when we moved here, we asked the local constable (Ed) what we could and could not do - he said "are you gonna do it on your own land? then do whatever the heck ya want."

our local constable is a bit of a character, though - I got stories...

btw - they sell hatching eggs, too. Not sure if everything they sell can be bought as hatching eggs or not, but maybe.

Yeah, my friend Larry said that basically the only type of 'game bird' you need a permit for is bobwhites. Pheasants aren't native here I guess, so they don't care about them. But if you would want something like canada geese or wood/mandarin ducks, then you would need one. I was wanting to get some mandarin ducks (they are beautiful!), but I have no idea where to get them from! I don't think for those I would need one to own them, just if I wanted to sell some.

I have hardly ever seen quail there period, and never buttons! I don't think there are that many people in this area that have them. I know my friends, May and Larry, both used to have them, but they have both gotten out of them, said there wasn't a very big market for them. That's why I wish we had a pet store nearby. I'd bet in Louisville or Bowling Green they would sell pretty good!

Ed went so far as to tell us if we have a problem with folks doing bad things on our land, then don't call him til it's over (IOW shoot first) then call him and he knows some good sinkholes we can use to dump the body.

I think he was half serious.

Although, Kentucky does have one of the least restrictive Castle Laws in the country - so maybe he was serious

(well, maybe not about the sink-hole part....

Well, maybe we ought to corner the local market then

they don't have them cause they don't know how cute they are (or how tasty, in the case of the bigger ones) we just need to educate them
