PUre barred rocks are not sex linked. You can't tell the sexes until they are a few weeks old and start to get their feathers. The females will look mostly black, and the males will have obvious barring on them. The sex link trait is only if they are mixed with something else, and the roo is the BR

So let me get this straight... I'm reading between the lines here.

You are selling these puppies and your son Chris wants to keep this particular puppy so you are selling the puppy with Chris thrown in to sweeten the deal?

If I remember from past posts, Chris does well with chickens but I'm not so sure about the dog, so I'll have to pass on this one!
(he says at the risk of incuring the wrath of a loving and very protective mother)

Geez, I think I'd keep the dog if you would take the kid! Dogs are much easier to potty train!! Plus you don't have to fight with them to eat their vegetables.

No problem, I thought they were sexlinked too until I got some eggs from cthrash1. All of them hatched with white spots, so I was pretty bummed. Until I figured out how to sex them. It is very hard to tell them apart unless you have both males and females, so you could keep all the females and sell the males, and no one would figure it out for a while

Kinda sneaky, but people have done worse things!

I don't think there is much difference. The red bulb will allow them to sleep easier as it is easier on the eyes. They tend to sleep a lot. If you give them a hiding place like a fake hen to crawl under then I don't think the color of the bulb would matter.

Today I am pleased to announce that my dogs know what "get the kitty" means

I have had this stoop!d orange tom cat running around here (endangering a hen I have sitting on eggs in the barn, and endangering any other chicken or duck stupid enough to not realize a cat is dangerous).

Well, this morning, for some reason, I had a half eaten dead possum in my yard - I also had four huge vultures eating on it this morning when I walked out. I was hoping they'd be back to finish the job, but they left it.

So, I go out just now to check eggs, and this dang tom cat is out there gnawing on the possum. Being windy, Toby and Lily decided to stay inside (Toby gets ear infections, so he avoids high winds if he can) but I saw that cat and coaxed them both, quietly, to come out onto the porch, then I pointed and yelled "Get the Kitty" and they about chased/fought/scared that cat into the next county.

At one point, Toby (because Lily is afraid of the hotwire fence, and wouldn't follow) had the cat clinging to his head, while he tried to rip it's throat out.

The cat finally made it to the safety of the woods and up a tree for the day, with Toby doing the beagle call at the bottom of the tree just to let him know there was more where THAT came from

I doubt that cat will be back today - he might be brave enough to try tonight, but I'll bet Toby and Lily will be on watch for the rest of the day

.

If I had had a gun handy, he'd be toast right now, instead, he got away to come back another day when folks with better aim than I have will be ready to take him down. I figured by the time I got the gun and/or got hubby to come shoot him, he'd be gone.

Toby and Lily are now munching happily on the leftover pork chops I gave them for their bravery and service to the farm

good dogs. eta - thankfully, they know the difference between "their" kitty and strange kitties. If I yelled Get the Kitty to them and all that was there was their kitty, they'd bark and look around trying to find the kitty.

One reason I came to BYC is to learn and clear up any misconceptions I might have. See how much smarter I look now?

Silly dogs! That's good that they 'got the kitty' though. We don't even have to tell Princess about those, she hates cats. She wouldn't even let one be here that was supposed to be!

My neighbor has an orange cat, but this one isn't his - I have no idea where this cat came from, but it is very wild, scruffy and mean looking.

It's not his fault he is a stray and has to get his dinner where he can, but I'll be darned if that will make me let him eat whatever he wants off MY farm

If I could get him to leave and stay gone, I'd be happy to let him live, but I'm afraid he's going to have to "meet Jesus" before long.

eta = I really need to get me one of those live traps.
