Kentucky people

Well, chicks I have are two barred rock mixes, one black australorp mix, and the rest are Dellie mixes - at least two for sure mixed with brahma hens. Not sure on the others who their mama is.

I got more duck eggs today - they were closer to normal size, saw the blue drake mating with all three hens, and the one egg I checked was fertile, so I'll be saving those to try to hatch.

4 of the quail hens are laying now, just one more to go til all of them are laying.

I still can't decide which duckies to keep - at this rate they'll be full grown before I can decide. I was gonna change their bedding again tonight, and when I went in there, they were out of food - and hungry

so while I'm trying to put clean bedding down before I give them fresh food and water, I have half of them nibbling on my hands. How am I supposed to choose when they are all so adorable??? I want them all
gig.gif
can't keep them all, but I want them all. (I have the pellet stuff down, but have been keeping puppy pads on top of it for the first couple weeks, since they try to eat the pellets when they turn to mush.)

Here's something weird - I had a couple stop by today, out of the blue, to ask if I had any Mammoth Jacks. I said nope, all I have are standards and minis, so they saw the chickens and asked if I had any laying hens for sale
lau.gif
I had to tell them no on that one, I still need more laying hens, myself, but I said if they wanted some chicks I hatched some out last week. I told him the parentage, etc... He said he'd be back friday if he couldn't find any hens.

so that was my day....

What is a mammoth jack? And how weird is that that they would just stop and ask you? Strange people. Probably better lock your coops, in case they get sticky fingers. Or leave the dogs out for the night. There are some stupid people in this area!

What do you plan on doing with all the ducks that you'll hatch? I have heard that calls are hard to hatch, so you might want to check that out before trying it.

You shouldn't keep puppy pads down, unless you plan on keeping them down all the time. They will try to eat it no matter how old they are, until they figure out it's not food. I had a lot of people tell me they wouldn't eat the shavings, but when I put some in their brooder cause I needed to clean it and it was very late, they were gobbling it up. Now they don't even look at it.

I wish my quail would lay!! Well, sort of anyway. They look like they are molting though, so that's probably the problem. I was going to put them outside in their new cage while its warm, but I can't if they are molting. The electric dad had out there has goofed up, and he can't figure it out to fix it. It keeps flipping the circuit, so no heat light for them. Guess I'll just have to wait till it gets warm again. If their darn cage wasn't so short I could put a box in there for them to sleep in. The door is only like 6" tall though, so I doubt I'd be able to get a box through that.

A mammoth jack is a huge donkey (sometimes they call mules mammoth jacks, too, but this guy wanted the donkey version).

My quail are doing great out in the coop (in a cage). I put some hay in the cage, so they can burrow into it if they need to. They just mashed it down, though, and pile on each other if they get chilled.

I was using the puppy pads because I'm changing them three times a day - simply because with so many of them, they are messy. I don't know how often I'd have to change the pellets, so I'm sort of waiting til I weed out the ones I want to keep - and narrow down the numbers a bit.

If they eat the wet pellets (which turn to mush) won't it make them sick? or at least plug up their crops? I figure when they are older they won't eat as much, as when they are younger. Maybe?

heck, I don't know. At least they'd be bigger, so it wouldn't harm them as much, perhaps.

I read somewhere, that you should keep them off hay/shavings/etc. until they are at least two weeks old.

I've heard that calls are hard to hatch, not sure if they'll hatch or not, but I figured I'd give it a shot. Once they hatch I'll sell them, I guess. I don't need that many of them.

I don't think these two are the type to steal birds. They were pretty "white bread America" types. I have met some folks I would worry about, but I think these guys are on the up and up. Besides, they knew Jr. Walker, so I would be willing to trust them a little more just because of that.

well, gonna go to bed -

They will try to eat it no matter how old they are, just because it's something new. Like a baby, they have to put everything in their mouths. If you're worried about it hurting them you could give them some grit to help them grind it up. I doubt they would eat enough of it to hurt themselves though.
Maybe I'll try that with the quail, just putting some hay in the cage. The stupid chickens would probably peck it out though. My other two that are already out there don't have anything to go into, but when they did they wouldn't go into it anyway. But they have been outside all winter, so they are used to it.
When my older babies were babies, I used the puppy pads too. I changed them 3 x's a day, and it stunk like high heaven in there. The pellets work so much better to keep the stink down. I hadn't heard anything about keeping them off hay etc. I asked Julie at Day & Day, and she said they always have theirs on shavings when they have them there. And you know those are just a few days old. She also told me they wouldn't eat the shavings, but mine did when I put shavings in their box.

Well, I woke up this morning to my kid yelling "Mommy!!! Those baby ducks are outta their cage!!" There is a part of their fence that isn't staying down with the ground, and evidently they found that part. I didn't even notice it until they got out. I guess it's cause the ground is so soft now. It wasn't like that when I put that fence up. But those babies were just wandering around the yard like 'hey, this is pretty nice'

I'm surprised they didn't get bullied by any chickens. They were no trouble to get back in though. All I had to do was give them some food. They ate and went right in their 'house'.

Oh, and my kid has figured out that if he tells mommy he's sick, he can stay home. So in the future, he is going to school unless he has fluids of some sort coming out of one end of his body....little liar.

He tells me 'mommy, I was just pretending'. Grrrrr.....

Yeah, I am changing the pads about three times a day - they do get stinky - especially first thing in the morning when I walk in there. I don't have to go anywhere today, so I'll try them without the pads later on - they all ate and are taking a nap, now, so I'll wait til they yuck up these pads. (that ought to take another hour or so

)

Sammy didn't close my front door tight this morning when he left (at 6:30) so when I got up at 9:00 the door was wide open and the furnace had been running for all that time. It isn't cold, but the furnace ran anyway, cause the thermostat is close enough to the wind blowing in that it thought it was cold.

wow, I can't type for anything this morning

I used to tell my kids that unless they had blood coming out their eyes, they were good to go (Jon was really bad about faking sick, he hated preschool! and it only got worse from there).

I can't wait til my ducks are old enough to go out and run around the yard. They're entertaiing enough in the playpen, I can only imagine what they'll do once they get to run free.

Guys,
I am looking for bantam cochins.
I would love to buy a trio of blues or mottled.
I am interested in eggs, chicks, and adults. Post up,email, or PM me if you have any to part with. I am in Berea just south of Lexington.
I have buff, silver laced, and partridge that should start laying soon. I would love to swap eggs for different colors.
I have a nice trio of Black Jersey Giants that are just starting to lay (this is their first spring) that I am thinking of parting with. Thanks, and I hope everyone survives this wind!

If he doesn't have it, he may know someone who does have it.

How much would you want on the Giants? I've been considering some of those.

I have a trio of mottleds with a black pullet that haven't started laying yet that I got from bluedog. I can let you know when they start laying if you'd like. There are a few other people waiting on them to start, so it will be a little while after they start before I could get some for you.
There is an auction in Liberty in April, if you ever go to it. There are all sorts of chickens there, least there was last fall. I'll let everyone know when it is, maybe you could find birds there.
