I think my problem was a mix of the fan and the thermometer. I put another thermo in there, and the one that was originally in there was reading 4 degrees higher than the one I had used before. I did calibrate the new one, but it doesn't seem to hold it well? It is very variable, keeps changing just for the heck of it. Plus the fan was aggravating me, so I took it out. I'll just use my hovabator in the future, and sell one of the LG's, once I get my eggs out of there. I'll probably buy another hova, they work great!!

I thought the thermometer/hygrometer might be messed up in the hatcher, cause I had three sponges and a paper towel in there, and it still had read 43% . I put another thermo in there, and they both read the same, though, so it was reading properly.

I stuck the plugs in for an hour, then took them out and it came up to 70% and stayed there. That was really weird.

I have to do some research, though, cause I lost another one during the night - pipped and died before zipping. I must have done something wrong during incubation. Maybe too high a humidity all during? The average humidity during incubation was about 60% . Usually I keep it right around 40-45% I was experimenting - guess I got it wrong.

ok, this doesn't make much sense - maybe on the first two that pipped and died, but the humidity had been up to 70% or higher for the last one....

Symptoms Probable Cause
Pipped eggs, but died without hatching Insufficient moisture Increase humidity (wet-bulb temperature) during
the hatching period.
Improper ventilation Increase ventilation rate in incubator and/or
room, but avoid drafts.
Improper setting of eggs causing malpositioned embryos
Set eggs with small end down. Turn eggs properly but avoid turning
within 3 days of hatching.

Hey Meri, I read on here somewhere also that sticky chicks can be caused by the humidity being too high also. Doesn't make sense to me, but that's what 'they' say.
Here's a site (might be the one you have) on hatchability problems.

If anyone buys from there be careful that it's not from Fat David and his emo teenager Tyler--they are the ones that sold tubbychicken and I the sick birds last summer. They still post for sale ads on craigslist and they live in between Berea and Richmond. The avian leukosis his birds have is transmitted through eggs and chicken poop.

Yeah, way back when we were starting to raise chickens, that is the first incubator we ever had.Since it works off the heat of a light bulb, you have to watch it closely to make sure the temp stays consistent but we succeded in hatching several birds out of it.
