I thought the thermometer/hygrometer might be messed up in the hatcher, cause I had three sponges and a paper towel in there, and it still had read 43% . I put another thermo in there, and they both read the same, though, so it was reading properly.
I stuck the plugs in for an hour, then took them out and it came up to 70% and stayed there. That was really weird.
I have to do some research, though, cause I lost another one during the night - pipped and died before zipping. I must have done something wrong during incubation. Maybe too high a humidity all during? The average humidity during incubation was about 60% . Usually I keep it right around 40-45% I was experimenting - guess I got it wrong.
ok, this doesn't make much sense - maybe on the first two that pipped and died, but the humidity had been up to 70% or higher for the last one....
Symptoms Probable Cause
Pipped eggs, but died without hatching Insufficient moisture Increase humidity (wet-bulb temperature) during
the hatching period.
Improper ventilation Increase ventilation rate in incubator and/or
room, but avoid drafts.
Improper setting of eggs causing malpositioned embryos
Set eggs with small end down. Turn eggs properly but avoid turning
within 3 days of hatching.
