That sucks!! I would be so bummed!

It's cool that ya got some quail, though. You can probably put them in with the doves and let them hang out in the bottom of the cage. I want soem quail, if I could talk the guys into eating them, LOL. If they won't eat them, there's no point getting them.

How big do pharaoh quail get?

See ya tomorrow morning

Meri

They aren't but a handful, and they're full grown. The guy that I got them off of didn't even know how to sex them, he said he only gets them to eat. So they must be good ones.
I'll have to talk to dad about putting them in with his pigeons. I hadn't even thought of that!! I will have to check and make sure there is nowhere for them to get out. Idk, though, cuz the pigeons do go on the bottom of the coop, they might fight with them.

You said before that the guys like white meat right? Some of the eggs I have in the bator are the Texas A&M white cortunix, and they are supposed to have white breast meat, instead of dark. I will have to let you try some, if...no, when

they hatch!

Heya !! Welome to another Columbia person!!!

Shelley and I are both in Columbia (so to speak).
I'm just on my way over to her house, actually, to grab some eggs and a couple of pullets.

We'll all have to hook up sometime and have coffee and talk chickens
smile.png

BTW _ the spitzs - are those eggs in a bator or are those laying or close to laying yet? I'd love to buy some hatching eggs from you. I have three spitzs - none laying yet - I'm not even sure how many are roos and how many are pullets. They aren't exectly "type" so I am looking for some other breeding stock to mix with them to improve the look.

Peace -
Meri

I got a couple dozen eggs and five blue splash baby girls from Shelley.

I turned the babies out into the banty coop and they immediately ran all over checking stuff out. They found the water and food, I threw in some cracked corn to keep everyone else busy, so they wouldn't be picked on too badly. Nana found them almost right off, and ran over to try to herd them into a group and sit on them,

. She is one weird baby girl.

Shelley, I did find the accurite thermometer. They had one left (and a couple of the white ones like you got). So, I should be all set to hatch some eggs

I'll keep an eye out (and ask all the men in the house) for a fan from their "boxes of many parts". I swear I could start a computer store with all the parts we got here. I must have a fan someplace.

Now I just have to wait until the other eggs I bought come. I got standard and bantam cochin eggs coming early next week. WOOHOO!!!!

I am thinking about 20 of those (combined) so I can probably fit most of the ones I got from Shelley in there, too. I need to have hubby make me one of those brooder boxes so I can put it out inside the main coop - so I don't have to brood in my sewing room, LOL. I'd hate to put them in a cardboard box out there, and the brooder cage is awfully open for tiny babies, but a box like that one would work great. Heck, I probably got all the parts I need, and if I build it into a corner, all I'll need are two sides and a top. I can do that myself.

Well, I need to go get a huge hay bale to the donkeys - they been singing to me for hay.

I'll be back on later today.

Peace -
Meri

Hey Meri,
I'm glad you got the thermometer. One thing you could do for a brooder is to get one of those plastic totes to put the babies in. We used that for Nugget, when she was all alone. It worked pretty good. I will have too many babies this winter, so that's why I have the big one on the porch.

I decided to let the baby guineas out of their cage finally. I have been watching them like a hawk ever since!! They are real tame, much more than my adults. I can get pretty close to them without them running off. Now that will probably change, once they get used to the place! They are pretty scared, and have been trying to hang out with every group of chickens they find. The ones they were bunking with started trying to fight with them, so I don't know if they'll be able to stay in there with them or not. They went and hung out with my splash hen and her brood, but the hen ran off with the chicks, and the guineas lost them. So they found my other splash hen, but they didn't get real close with her. They even tried to get in with the pigeons and quail!! It's like every bird they see, they're asking 'Are you my mommy?' It is so cute. I herded them back into their tractor, so we'll see how they do. I'll probably herd them in there a lot, to try and get them to remember where they live.
I don't want to loose these, they are the lavender, and they are so pretty. Did you see them when you were here? I'll have to show you next time. I don't know what color the others are that I am supposed to get. We called the guy to let him know we were coming, but he wasn't home. I'll have to call him again later, to get the chicks and guineas.

Welcome Crittercrazy. Tubby Chicken, how old of chicks and of what kind. I have a pair of Black Jersey Giants which don't meet the standard, (legs are not fully black) so I am wanting to cull them. They are 16 + weeks old.
Another Lexingtonion (Kentuckysilkies) was giving away some silkies. Pic's are on page 59 of this thread. Don't know if he still has them or not.

Now if you want roos... I have two Black Bantam Brahma roos but no hens. Dog and Hawks took care of that.

I was worried when I first let the guineas out, too. They hung around the coop run for three weeks trying to get back in. That was when I had the big chickens in the main coop and the guineas had grown up in there with them.

I looked at plastic totes, but I'd love something permanant. I talked to hubby about building me one in the main coop, he said yeah, after he is done with the corral. I mentioned the benefits of having to only brood them indoors for maybe two days at most, then they could go out into the coop brooder box. Plus, with all the eggs I'll be hatching out, a plastic tote won't hold them for long. He asked why the brooder cage wouldn't work, I said because they'd be too tiny to go into the cage right off - they'd need something less drafty.

You were so lucky to find that guy, hope ya hook up with him soon. Heck, I'd love to find someone who'd give me free giant cochins!! LOL. I didn't get a good look at the guinea babies, because they were in the tractor - next time I'll be able to see em better.

Well, I got to go make dinner - strictly easy cooking tonight, gonna grill hotdogs.

Oh, it's supposed to Frost tonight - so anyone with babies outside, plan accordingly. I turned on the heat lamp this evening in the main coop for the new babies I got today - not sure if they'd need it or not, but better safe than sorry.

Peace -
Meri

Hey Crittercrazy...

I live in Somerset but next time I'm at Meri's we can all get togetheryou,Meri,Shelley, and us...I have a 10 yr old son too. Our pets are listed below in my personality Minus the Lab(if I haven't removed him) and a Cochin Bantam(chicken nugget for a hawk).

Hey all - We just attended a livestock field day for 4-H today and now DS wants to show cattle...Someone from Lincoln county said the Extention office there supplies the cow if you don't have one to show so the child can tell/show what they have learned... Anyway we learned a lot today it was fun.

Well, my baby guineas are in a different pen now, where they will stay for a while. I was inside for about an hour, and went out and saw two of them. I was so frantic trying to find the other, going all over the yard, the pasture, the woods. I just knew something had gotten the other one. The other two were in the mama hen's tractor, so I had Cris go in there to catch them. I could hear one calling, the cooing sound the babies make. I knew it wasn't the ones he was trying to get, they were going nuts! I got the others in a cage and went following the call. It had gotten seperated from the others, and was hiding in the barn! I was so happy! So now the guineas are in the quails' pen, and the quail are in the guineas old cage, the mama hen has all the babies in her nest (26 chicks!!!), and the silkies and japs are in their tractor all by themselves.
Those guys are gonna loose their light. We went to town to get the baby chicks, and when we got back, the silkies & japs were in their tractor, on the complete opposite side of the light! With the door open and the plastic still up! So I guess they don't need it anymore. That's good, cause I think the guineas still do, though I'm not sure.
Those poor baby guineas were getting picked on by everyone! I felt so bad for the little guys. The big chicks were trying to peck them, the gang bangers were chasing them around, an even the adult guineas were pecking at them. That's probably how they got seperated.
The chicks we got are all different types. He said some were cochins, there are 3 buff orps, some RIR, and some that look like light brahmas. Plus he gave me 5 baby guineas, that are not even day olds yet!
smile.png
They are the regular color, can't remember what it's called. I will probably sell those. I like the fancy ones
wink.png
I have to update my siggy, but mine are 3 chocolate, 2 buff, 2 lavender, and one lavender pied.

Meri---Did you talk hubby into building you a brooder coop yet? Then you would only need to divide it, to keep the smaller ones seperate from the bigger ones.

Hey remember? There's already a cow in the basement now keeping my baby silkie chickie company...And you're right, they aren't very big and don't eat much either.

Well, I just smelled the heat come on for the first time, you know, that dusty burning off the ducts smell. Our first sign of cold weather.

Since Belle isn't laying because she just had to go broody on me right after I signed up for that Oct swap, I am only down to one egg a day and sometimes 2 if I'm lucky from either Little Bit or one of the Millies.

I forgot to tell Layne where I put the key to the lock on the hatch and since we've been gone all day I haven't been back there til we got home earlier and I didn't notice at that time because I was in a hurry to leave again after I checked for eggs...So now when I went to put them up for the night they were fussing at me before I made it halfway back to the coop...I didn't know what was up until I went to open the hatch thinking it just got shut because Layne didn't hook it open...Nope my fault. Boy were they all ready to go to bed...I've never seen them scramble to their spots on the perch as quick as they did tonight...It was kind of funny. By the time I shut and relocked the hatch they were already all in their places for the night...So I tucked them all in and said goodnight.
