Kentucky people

So they're pretty tasty huh? I've wondered about that. Also about their eggs. Are they good?

Yes they are better than chicken, i promise. Stop by and i'll give you a couple to try. the meat is very moist & tender, the breast is like a mix of dark and white. Similar to pheasant but not gamey at all. Also i raised these on strictly organic feed. Have not tried the eggs yet.

Pop

Sounds great! I'll call ya and make sure you're home first.

I'm smack-dab in the middle of nowhere! The closest 'town' is about 13 miles away, and the biggest store there is a super walmart that was built a year ago. There is always lots of land for sale around here.
It doesn't get too awful cold but maybe 2-3 weeks in the winter. The humidity in the summer will kill you though!

I'm in the Green River Lake area, Adair county. It hardly ever snows here, and when it does it usually melts off when the sun comes out. I would say normally it's in the 30's and 40's daytime winter temps, with probably 20's and 30's nighttime temps, but it does get colder for a few weeks, but never below zero, at worst probably in the teens (without windchill). There are 2 lakes that are 'close' by where I live, I already mentioned GRL, which is about 20 minutes from my house. The other is Lake Cumberland, which is about 45 minutes to an hour from me. Then there is the land between the lakes area, but that's on the wesstern side of KY. Word of warning, if you're a drinker, there are only about 50 counties in the state that are wet

OHHH Shelley we're coming to visit!!! Actually we're just sick of Ohio winters where's there's FEET of snow and temps below 0. A few weeks here and there are ok. We are drinkers but we do it at home; safer that way. Please give me some cities where we'd fit in.

Owingsville! I live in Sharpsburg now, but either one is TINY and you aren't gonna have any close neighbors unless you want them!

That sounds wonderful! Can you name cities for me though? I'm looking up on realtor.com and it takes cities. Shelley - that's what I meant. Want fields - don't care what kind - as far as the eye can see. Right now we are in the rural suburbs and don't like it. Don't want housing developments and don't care about schools (no kids going). Just want to raise chickens & ducks. As far as work, I currently work for a trucking company (manage the billing and payroll depts) but could work at Walmart and be happy (seriously). We were planning on moving to TX but it's too hot and too far. Debating now between KY and WV. So far I prefer KY.

so....

Hubby takes me out to dinner tonight (nothing fancy, The Circle R - local joint - they have good onion rings) and while we are sitting waiting for our food he says to me "I hope you're not planning to get anything at Sydney's tomorrow"
lau.gif

so I had to come clean and tell him that "why yes, I was planning to get something..."
wink.png

I had to promise to sell the baby cochins to make room for the two big blue girls, though (which I had planned on anyway
wink.png
so no sacrifice). But at least I don't have to hide them (yeah, like I'm gonna be able to hide two big fat blue chickens
gig.gif
) and he didn't complain too badly. He knows I've been wanting blue cochins, so he probaby figured this is better than me ordering a full order of them in the spring as chicks
lau.gif

he ain't overjoyed, but he ain't whining, either - so that means I win

Ok, try Columbia (Breeding/Sparksville is where I am, technically) Edmonton, Burkesville areas. All three are smaller sized towns. (Only Columbia has a Walmart, if that matters
wink.png
) Campbellesville is about 18 miles north of Columbia (has a walmart and a tsc and a lowes).

when we looked, I just stuck my finger on the map (ended up being Columbia) and I started searching there.

We actually looked the year before out eastern KY, loved the scenery, didn't care for the roads
lau.gif
the roads around here aren't much wider but at least they don't ice up (or if they do it melts off by 10 AM - as does the snow usually). sometimes get flooding in winter on some lower roads, but none that I've ever driven on, those are usually the "really" backroads.

In winter instead of snow we get rain - and since we have clay soil, we have Mud Season
gig.gif
it is a relief when it actually freezes up a little
wink.png
Chicken coop concerns are flooding and mud, mostly - I just put a lot of sand in my run, to keep it from being a poopy slurry. (but don't ask about my barn
sickbyc.gif
especially this year - I got cows now, gonna be a real treat... NOT.)

Shelley is right - LOTS of trees. The drive down to Burkesville/Lake Cumberland is like driving through a National Park at times - very pretty scenery here. I'm convinced that most of the accidents down here happen because someone was looking at scenery and hit a stone wall.

One other Adair County plus - our licence plate tabs are cheaper than Metcalfe county or any other county around, I think. (36 bucks)

Oh, you can try Russell county, also - Russell Springs is the county seat. it is about 15 miles from Columbia (Somerset is a larger city too - they even have a Mall, I hear
lau.gif
never been to it, though). Somerset is about 40 miles from Columbia.

one more thing to add --- my property taxes last year were 117 bucks (for the full year) on 25 acres.

Cities/towns in this area would be Campbellsville, Columbia, Somerset, Greensburg (sort of), Glasgow (sort of), Russell Springs, Danville, Dunville, Liberty, Knifley, Jamestown, and that's about it for 'close' to this area.

Russell Springs has a mall? I don't think so! It's probably the shopping center that has a Pizza Hut and a movie theater in it
tongue.png

But they do have a Kmart, and a Papa John's
lau.gif

And like Mojo Meri said, we have 3 seasons: Summer, winter, and mud!!

Well, Cindy lives there (and the closest Kubota Dealer is there) so I found out a few things about Somerset

(mostly while trying to find the dang Kubota Dealer)

Oh btw - did I mention that I AM GETTING TWO BIG BLUE COCHIN HENS TOMORROW?
