Kentucky people

Spyder, I am sorry to hear about your loss, I hope you find another kitty to love on soon.

Cindy, how is Amy doing? Still progressing I hope.

KentuckySilkies, glad to see you are still around. Hope your recovery goes smoothly.

Meri, If you haven't castrated Mookie yet, I like Andora's idea, keep him as a stud bull and raise your own cattle. There was an ad on Craigslist Louisville for Holstien calves, already on grass, really cheap. Ad didn't specify if they were steer or heifer calves. But your other idea of sending him with hubby and hiding out seems good to me.

Well my friend that is selling me her farm has hit a snag with her new place, appears there is still some sort of cloud on the title so she is trying to get her earnest money back and is looking at another place. We are going to look at it on Saturday. This one is only a 1 acre property, but she said that it appears that at least half of it is already fenced in by new fencing.

So that means my move is postponed, so I will be staying here until something definite happens.

Jen4 congrats on the 7 babies so far, let's hope the other 4 hatch for you as well.

I can't believe nobody else is on or posted since my last post! Got my student loans notification today! My class starts next Monday and the disbursement takes place the second week of class, so I guess I'll have them direct deposit it into my checking account whatever is left over after the tuition is taken care of. Should be around $1800.00.

Meri congrats on getting the Farm Grant. Do you have to wait to be reimbursed until the end of the year or can you submit your bills throughout the year for repayment? Depending on how things go with my move I may have to apply for one next year to make improvements to my new place.

Almost lost my one baby silky the other day, stupid bird got out of the pen and luckily made it to the compost bin before the dogs got it. When I checked today it was back in the pen with momma and the rest. Guess it learned it's lesson. My other hens have stopped laying, guess it's the weather we've been having rainy, then sunny but cool. Hopefully they 'll start producing again shortly.

Thanks.... hey today is day 24 and the 4 eggs still havent done anything, should I leave them alone, the momma is still sitting on them. Going to go check on them in a bit.

Update on the last 4 eggs... are no good. 3 had nothing in them but egg... the last one had a chick but it was not ready and dead... But the good news is we have 7 healthy BO chickies with momma, Did good for our 1st hatch.

I believe they do an inspection when you're done, then they turn in your receipts and you get the check then - I'll know more after the meeting we have to go to.

I almost missed the deadline, because I didn't even know about the program. My neighbor told me to go in and apply (he applied, also) and that way I could do my fencing cheaper to me.

Each county does their own, so check with the county extension office next summer after you move, and see if they will be offering it again next year.

7/11 is a great ratio. My last broody only hatched 5 out of 11 - I was happy just to get the five. Have had a hard time with her hatches this summer - not sure why. She's a good broody and a great mom, just have had troubles (maybe the weather? fertility?)

Meri, have you candled the eggs yet?

Well, after spending almost $80 on gaskets for the fuel intake on dad's truck, it now turns out that the problem is the fuel pump.

Luckily, my cousin has ordered one for dad, and will be bringing it over on Saturday to put it on the truck. Hopefully this will be the last problem with this 'new' truck, and we won't be stranded all winter. It is getting harder and harder to find a ride anywhere, dad's 'friends' are always conveniently unavailable.

I did candle last night - and I know that some of them are developing, not sure on some others. The duck egg is developing

Like ya need one lone duck again, eh? I had a hard time telling with some of the shells, and it is a little early yet, so if it was "iffy" I figured they mgiht candle fertile later on. (I do better candling at 12 - 14 days)

My call duck eggs I nabbed from DD aren't fertile, so I need to take those out of my incubator.

Meri: ya didn't want that lovely aroma of rotten duck eggs??

I ended up tossing all of my broody hens eggs since a hen and rooster died in the coop earlier this week and sprayed the whole place down with bleach and then put in some DE....

Miss Sunshine is quite put out to say the least that all of the eggs she's horded from the other girls are now gone.... I thought she would smack me when she went in and saw her eggs gone....

So explain to me how a chicken with no thumb can move eggs from nesting box to nesting box w/o breaking them when there's a wall in-between the nesting boxes and their 6 inches off the floor....

I saw the ducks and turkeys move eggs but that was on the ground so I can understand that....

They tuck them under their wings, have you ever picked up a broody with chicks and had to 'shake' her to get the chicks out?
