Kentucky people

so, this mornign I open the coop doors as usual, and let everyone out... and two of the newer girls (orps from Spydertoyz) went off to the far reaches of the pasture... over by the woods, and even down into the woods. I didn't see them for the rest of the day, and figured "uh-oh, the coyote got them, or a hawk..."

Well, tonight all are in the coop and accounted for. No idea where they spent the day but it wasn't in MY yard

Maybe I need to lock them up tomorrow to teach them the woods is a no-no. Yeah, like they'll learn any other way but being chased by the resident coyote.

btw - speaking of odd creatures...

I had a deer running madly all over my hayfield today - for like 10 minutes, he acted like a puppy who had been locked up all day then let out to run. I am pretty sure it was a doe, too, not a buck, or I'd think maybe he is in rut, but the neighbor came past during, and he said he almost hit it, and it was definately a big doe.

It kept running around and around, then up and down the hills, then out into the road, then it ran down the middle of the road and across to the neighbors horse pasture, two minutes later it came back and made a few more rounds of the hayfield.

It didn't stumble or stagger, didn't act sick, just crazy or very very happy. No idea what was up with it. It finally went back across the road and didn't return.

Yeah, I suspect a combo of Old Roy and Cat poo.

I used to buy them more expensive food - but I was in a hurry one day and grabbed a bag of Old Roy - they fight over the food dishes now (there are two dishes, they still growl at each other). They never fought over food before Old Roy came into the picture.

Do you suppose Old Roy tastes like Cat Butt or something else they find irresistable?

It probably does taste that bad. Or maybe it's made of old cat poop. My coonhound also loves cat poop, by the way.

I used to have a beloved wiener doggy, and whenever she ate any kind of Ol' Roy treats or food, she would fart all the way up the steps. Like a loud toot with each step!

They sell the Diamond Naturals food at TSC, and I'm trying to get our local feed store to carry it because we started buying cheaper chicken feed there, but for some reason the feed store will only carry regular diamond dog food and not the natural kind. The natural kind has way better ingredients and only costs like $5 more per bag at TSC.

Congrats on the chickies Jen4!!!!

Amy got to come home today... Her results showed a lot of improvement but she isn't out of the woods quite yet and is still really weak... Can barely push to do the 2. I have amoxicillin 200 mg to give her every 12 hrs til its gone and a special canned food made for healthy kidney function. The vet did all he could, the rest is up to her now.

Cindy, glad to hear the good news about Amy. Keeping good thoughts for her to continue to improve.

Jen4, 3 babies! Hope the other 7 hatch out for you as well. Nothing like watching a Momma and her chicks scratch around the yard.

Great news about Amy

and great news about more baby orps hatching

Man is it cold out there this morning!! It was so cold last night that Toby wanted to climb into our bed and cuddle
lau.gif
he doesnt do that in summer when it's hot out. Considering the aroma wafting out of his nether regions, I made him go back out with Bruce to have snacks so I could fall asleep without the "air freshener"

Nothing much going on this morning so far - did chores, let the chickens out, the new orps went off to the far side of the pasture again
hmm.png
I guess we'll just see how they do with that, and hope for the best.

Hubby asks me last night if I thought he had more time this year to let the hay grow a bit more before that last cutting. How the heck should I know?? this is such a weird weather pattern, it could snow next week for all I could fathom
lau.gif
I figure he has some time, yet, though. Last year it was quite late when we did the last cutting - mostly because we couldn't find anyone to do it, so we had to buy equipment and do it ourselves. I told him just watch the weather and don't let it frost on the Johnson Grass

and he could leave it as long as it wasn't rainy season or seeded out. We have a couple of areas of Johnson grass out there in the field.

Nibbler is acting funky, too

(cute funky, not sick). Last night we put a new hay bale out for the donkeys, and she usually is first in line to chase the tractor down the pasture to get to it first, but she wanted me to scratch inside her ears and pet on her. Then this morning while everyone was eating (she usually shoves to the front then, also) she came over to lean on me for more loving. I think she's a bit jealous of the new baby getting all the hugs and cuddles. Butters, too, but not as bad as Nibs.

Mookie (my first calf, he is getting BIG) wanted scratchies last night too. I must have stood there for 15 minutes scratching his ears and where his horns are coming out. He just kept rubbing his face on my shirt and licking my hand if I stopped
lau.gif
He's such a sweetie, it might be harder to butcher him than it was with Stella. Stella was such a spazz, but Mook is very mellow and easy going.

maybe I should keep one for the freezer that I don't like as well?

Such a cold day, I am thinking something hearty for dinner tonight - still not sure what, though. I'm not really in the mood for chili - a pot of beef stew sounds good, though... maybe.... any suggestions?

My favorite kitty passed away yesterday. She was well loved and I will miss her snuggling every night.

She was a barn cat that I took in the house about 7 years ago. I don't know how old she was at that time, but she quickly became a dear friend. She was funny about catching flies, mice etc...she wouldn't even attempt it. She seemed to figure that she had done enough of that fending for herself thing and didn't want to do any work any more. She refused to go outside even..lol!!
When another barn cat had her kittens under my computer desk, Mousie would steal them and take them into the closet and snuggle with them. Even though she could not nurse them. I was constantly counting babies to make sure everyone was present at meal times. So she earned the nick-name "Mama Mouse". I had her spayed and she appeared to have never had a litter of her own. Her favorite one to steal was my 22 pounder Spyder..so I kept him for her. He has been looking for her everywhere.

If anyone has any free long haired kitties close by..please let me know. No orange ones please..I am not partial to them.

I need to fill the void.

In loving memory of my Mousie ( Mama Mouse)
